Recently I interviewed at Meta for 45 minute screening round. First the interviewer joined 10 minutes late. Then from the beginning he was constantly looking at the other screen watching videos or chatting and constantly laughing. He just typed the question on my screen and paid little to no attention to whatever I was saying. Entire time his attention was somewhere else. What made this worse is at the end when I got a chance to ask him questions, he was looking at other screen and laughing on my face. This was not only distracting but also demotivating to perform in the interview. I admit I performed bad and will most likely get a reject. But I know I could perform better if interviewer was respectful. I haven't heard from recruiter yet. Should I emailed him and informed about this experience? Edit: I emailed recruiter and he said he will escalate this to leadership and get back to me. No reject or another round so far. Will keep it posted.
Should’ve happened right after interview. Similar experience interviewing with Meta. 4/5 interviewers were good but they all said “watch out for so and so your 5th interviewer”, and the 5th interviewer turned out to be a narcissistic ahole who already made up his mind before meeting me.
I had another interview next day, so moved my focus on prepping for that. It's over and now thinking about providing feedback
❄️
Meta recruiters and interviewers are getting worse by the day. 4/5 of my interviewers were good but I wish the one who conducted my system design round was more experienced. I wish they knew to have some empathy towards candidates in this market. You dont have to approve them but be involved in the interview. Mine hardly spoke, or asked any questions or eye contact. He rejected me and the recruiter refused to share feedback.
Ditto - the sys design person was very bad in communication for me.
My Meta sys design barely talked. I much prefer when the sys design is more of back and forth collab.
My interviews got cancelled last minute twice.
A single IC being an inconsiderate asshole can cause your initial screening interviews to be moved. Those people gradually lose interviewing karma so it should improve.
I had a very similar experience at Meta in London a few years ago. Interviewer was 15-20 minutes late to interview and then asked if I changed the room? Heavily implied I was somehow at fault for he being late?
That sucks to hear and is not okay. I’d share that feedback to the recruiter. When I interviewed at Meta and most people I’ve referred have remarked on the process being great. Conversely, Google for me (many years ago now) was quite bad. Every company will have some number of shitty, entitled people who are forced to do interviews but really shouldn’t be.
^ This !
One of my Google interviewers came off as arrogant and didn't even realize this was a system design interview until I told him halfway through. Had me implementing a function.
Googla ain’t any better
Why don’t people start recording their interview when things like this happen?
I am not a lawyer, but my understanding is that in California two party consent is required. But yeah, that behavior is not acceptable, definitely tell the recruiter.
sorry you had this experience. Please do let your recruiter know!
