If you’re doing software engineering work, I think it is safe and reasonable to say you were a software engineer. The background check will likely not hurt you.

Yeah but would you get an employment verification letter and if so, would that letter say 'software engineer' or something else like 'contractor'. Would like confirmation from someone who knows.
