Do FB / Google only hire from top tier schools?

So every data scientist that I️ look up that’s working at Facebook or Google seems to have gone to a pretty good school - MIT, Harvard, NYU, University of Chicago, etc. This is for the NY office. Is this the norm or am I️ seeing skewed results on LinkedIn and through meet ups? I’m working on my masters at a local school and am wondering if I️ should look to transfer or know that I’ll just have to work that much harder to get noticed when I️ apply in a few years. Am I️ being paranoid for no reason?

I know someone who works at Google as a software Engineer and he never finished high school. He was just brilliant as fuck and knew things from the get go. If you’re determined, motivated, and capable, no company is impossible to get a job at, regardless of your qualifications.

Google lllll Nov 24, 2017

No. The school helps get you the interview but it’s irrelevant beyond that.

Seriously doubtful here. The school is part of de-risking the decision.

Won’t argue as that may be true at google to some extent, but google is one employer out of thousands...

Facebook public Nov 24, 2017

It's common but definitely not required. Some of the best never even went to college.

Google MHSC22 Nov 24, 2017

The answer to your question: no. Source: I work for google after having graduated from a shit tier school in a semi-thirdworld country

Facebook Sona Nov 24, 2017

It depends. But there’s a bit of a double standard. It’s easier if you’re white. All of the Asians I know at fb went to a top 20 school. All of the black people I know went to Ivy League. I know white people that went state schools and some who didn’t go to college.

Facebook hhryjfd Nov 25, 2017

This is factually not true. Majority of Asians in FB got BS degree in China not in US. The same for Indians (though IIT is definitely over represented. Number of black people in eng is so small that you probably have to look at company wide data to draw any conclusion - I

Such a poorly thought out post. Does college affirmative action have a role in this? Also, do Asians shoot for prestige schools more often?

If you want the education, pay for it. If you want the job, go get it. Stop comparing yourself to others and you’ll be happier in life.

Fitbit mahalo2 Nov 24, 2017

Kind of meaningless advise given the context.

Cry more. It means everything when you read the OPs last sentence.

Coming from a top tier school certainly helps with getting sourced into the E3 (new undergrad) or intern pipeline, but it does zero for you after that. That said there’s certainly a correlation between the two. I went to a top 10 US CS dept but none of my immediate coworkers did.

Rackspace NC_emcee Nov 24, 2017

They don’t and shouldn’t. I know handfuls of Ivy grads who couldn’t find their ass with both hands and the lights on, much less write code about accomplishing said feat.

Google Skshbwnwbz Nov 24, 2017

They have target schools they send recruiters to — so it helps. But it isn’t a criterion and you can get there without going to a top tier school. I got the job applying online with no referral.

I went to a state school and I’m interviewing at FB on Monday. I didn’t even apply, recruiter emailed me out of the blue. I have loads of experience though. 17 years. Basically forever.
