Current job offers great PTO (20+ days) with potential to earn more each year since I’ve been here for a long time, great coworkers (truly great friends), and job security / stability. However, I probably won’t continue to climb for some time so my salary growth will slow. The new company offers a 50k increase to 200k, so it’s significant. However, they recently underwent a lot of layoffs and the general consensus online is poor. The PTO is also a week less, which I’m bummed about because I love to travel. But everyone says it may not be a concern due to remote work. It would be a promotion for my career and great experience. I also know a few people there. But I hesitate for fear of not being happy, because I’d be leaving something good for something more unknown. #engineering #engineering #software #swe #career #advice
100% stay
How come?
Given how untrustworthy and unstable employers are now, if you have a good thing going and like where you work, you should stay. In the past this would have been different, but times have changed and company's in general have become assholes, so stick with what is working for now.
50k is nothing when compared to job stability and good work culture and wlb. Learn how to trade and make money instead. After taxes you may make 10-15 k extra in 3 months while being in terrible wlb and then be PIPd. Is it worth it? Maybe stay low until job market gets better. Switch only if you can come back anytime to current company. Making money from investing is shit easy as long as you can detach your emotions from money.
I could go back since I’m in good standing, but it’s unlikely to be the same department and the market being rough could be cause for concern if it doesn’t improve
