Do I stand a chance for a Salesforce SWE role?

Current role: Consultant at Slalom (aka junior Salesforce developer) TC: 120k (incl 9% yr bonus) Yoe: 2 yrs Skills: Apex, Lwc, SOQL, all Salesforce admin/config I’m a Salesforce dev (certified dev 1) at Slalom, been there 6 months, learned a ton and I’ve proven myself as a quick learner, hard worker, and good developer (manager has briefly mentioned promoting me to senior dev after 1 yr at Slalom). Thinking about making a switch for 1) $$$ 2) more marketability as a SWE. Salesforce seems like the most natural place for me to try and move up and level up my tech skills. Question is what the title says: Does Salesforce hire devs like me? #engineering #software #swe #salesforce #career

Lol, I want to take that as a yes?

Your background isn’t really SWE, so might be tough to get an interview. Also we are currently in a hiring freeze. Definitely apply though once hiring freeze is lifted in a few weeks

Salesforce n0hana Jun 2, 2022

This, I’d think you fit more in solutions engineering

Slalom Consulting marshm OP Jun 2, 2022

@n0hana you might be right, thanks for the input. Are compensation packages the same for devs in solution engineering?

Salesforce dzuk15 Jun 2, 2022

Yes but not as a SWE. Either solutions consulting (pre sales) or technical consulting (delivery/prof secs) aka Customer Success Group. No harm in applying.

Don’t listen to “no way SWE”. If you truly worked with LWC, I’m talking advanced Js with front end and OOP patterns, testing, you are almost there for FE jobs. Your basics would be rock solid. Spend 1-2 months to learn React, hosting, typescript, Webpack and you are job ready.

Slalom Consulting marshm OP Jun 3, 2022

Awesome, yeah my dev skills are solid, but you hear mixed messages about how transferable SF software eng skills are. Thanks! Have you worked at SF? Are there any other technologies you would recommend familiarizing myself with?

Leetcode

Nope. There is weight in “no way swe”, even though it’s a bit blunt. Working on the platform is very different from building the platform itself. I haven’t seen a front end only role in India. You have to know DS algo and system design. Language doesn’t matter. If you are a good js dev, you can learn other languages as well. And if you do, you are already an swe. Then don’t just think about salesforce, you can apply and get a job anywhere. Since you are just hoping to get into salesforce, based on your experience building stuff on the salesforce platform, I doubt you’ll clear the interviews right now. You need prep. You need to become an swe. You had chosen a different career path. Switching to swe will not be easy, even though not impossible. You know, anyone can become an swe, but not everyone can. I hope you get my point.

Slalom Consulting marshm OP Jun 3, 2022

I currently spend 90% of my work time coding in 3-4 different languages, are you familiar with what a Salesforce Developer does? I would definitely consider myself an SWE, the question is more about how transferable these SWE skills are

Salesforce friskypot Jun 3, 2022

What you consider is not imp. What the industry and especially in this case salesforce thinks is imp. I hire people here, I know a bit or two about what kind of profiles get shortlisted and finally make the cut. See you are talking about ‘transferrable’ skills. That’s all I’m saying too. There’s a transition to SWE (or whatever you call it). You have to put in the effort, prepare yourself for the role. A lot of salesforce developers think they are SWEs. And I don’t agree. I don’t think they have the same skills. They can acquire those. You’d need a few months preparation to transform into an SWE. And then you’d need at least one job on that role in some other company before applying in salesforce. I haven’t seen anyone in my connection who has joined as an SWE from a salesforce developer background. Anyways, my point was not to discourage you. I recently saw a youtuber making such claims which is plain incorrect and then I saw this post, so felt like sharing what I think. You can ignore my comments. Or you can just prepare like I said and plan your career. You can also search on linkedin and message people who have done similar transition. And one more thing - if you are good at one or two popular languages, have good problem solving skills and can write optimal code, then yes you are an SWE. Don’t call yourself a salesforce developer then. SF developer is a niche role. E.g. Google has SF developers too, and they are not Google SWEs. The youtuber claims so, which is blatantly incorrect.

You gotta Leet code if you're trying to go in as SWE. Also read DDIA

Slalom Consulting marshm OP Jun 3, 2022

I think you’re right about leetcode. Gotta warm up my general algo building skills and prob data arch skills as wel
