I just see so many of them, and as an Asian person myself, I know that I, like many other Asians, work and study hard to have a career that my parents would approve (joking but not really). Do these big tech companies have this expectation of Asian employees? and do they target Asian candidates with these expectations? and why?
Too few Non Asians want to work in Tech and the mass immigration of Asian/Desis in STEM fields leads to the market being saturated. Also, the difficult visa norms and high COL keeps people on their toes leading to increased hustle in their fields of study and increased expertise.
In reality the industry is so saturated there is reverse discrimination against asians if youre a man
This. The industry is overwhelmingly Asian, but the qualified candidate pool is even more overwhelmingly Asian. The result we see is already adjusted by discrimination.
They don’t. They only hire good SDEs. If you are good SDE and Asian, they will hire. If you good SDE and no- Asian, they will also hire. If you are ordinary SDE, they wont hire you no matter you are Asian or not.
"they only hire good SDEs" no they dont. they hire people who can beat the interview. people who beat the interview arent always good SDEs
big tech wants to squeeze as much out of their employees as they can. their hiring practices bias towards poeple fitting that. 1) h1b visas give maximum leverage to the company 2) people from poorer families/countries are more reliant on the job's income 3) current asian mindset/work culture is much more employee friendly
Asian cultures just promote Engineering as a profession more IMO. I think other cultures are more liberally minded with exploring arts, other fields.
There is a nontrivial percentage of parents in Asia or in diaspora families in the West who will literally beat their children for not becoming an engineer or doctor
Wonder how long it will take before someone complains about “woke” or “tech bros” in this chat. Lol
Yes. Their hiring practices support it. At multiple places I've worked, the hiring policy is/was to allow a certain amount of time to pass after the job is posted to only allow for minorities to apply. Let's say a month or so. In combination with that, some places force you or heavily push you to hire the first candidate that fits your criteria, whether you feel you want to finish your next couple of lined up interviews that or next week as well. You can see how this affects who is hired and why. I'm all for helping certain people out, but what we get is a bunch of foreigners (typically Indian or Asian) who aren't actually struggling in the first place. I'd like to see more Black and Mexican in the hiring pools personally. As someone else mentioned, this is good for the company because visas mean employees have to stick with the company longer. I've also seen a shift in the last 5 years to heavily focus on hiring in Europe because of their education and dirt cheap pay expectations.
Is India Asian?
technically yes. But in the American sense of the word, it refers more to East Asians and Vietnamese ppl. Esp. Chinese and Koreans.
Companies hire the people that can beat the interviews dude, Asian or non Asian.
