I need to sign a new apt lease soon, but I might want to leave SF before another year from now (love my job and company, hate the city). So in the future if I move to a tech company in NYC, would it be likely that they’d cover the cost of ending my current lease 3-6mos early? If not, I’ll need to consider signing a shorter duration lease now, which might be hard in SF.
Big companies like FB do it.
yes, the new company will cover if relocation is part of the offer.
I know Facebook does
Google let's you pick from a bag of relocation stuff they will cover. This might be one of the choices but picking it will prevent you from getting another benefit. Personally, I think it's a bag idea to sign a legal contact that you don't think you'll be able to honor. Maybe your current place will let you tack on a shorter lease duration when your current lease is done. They are more likely to do it because it doesn't increase their turnover costs like a new short lease would for a new place
My reloc package included lease termination.
Microsoft paid two months rent to my old landlord when I moved here
