Do you always negotiate your offer?

What if the offer was way above what you expected? What if the offer was within the range you provided to the recruiter/hiring manager?

Microsoft ABoT Sep 4, 2018

Where is the offer from?

Don’t provide a range and always negotiate.

Yeah range is bullshit — here is a good blog that addresses negotiations. https://haseebq.com/my-ten-rules-for-negotiating-a-job-offer/

Why would you not?

Google VsFX76 Sep 4, 2018

I didn't and I regret it every day. I try not to think about what could/should have been.

Why not? As long as you're nice about it, the worse they can say is no. Must companies won't rescind an offer just for asking for more.

If the offer was above your expectations then there is either a grade mismatch ( in a good way for you) or you have not done your hw about the role and company. If the offer is within the range and you feel that is what you should be paid then you have done your hw. Unless they absolutely don’t move the needle there is always room for negotiation, depending on where you want to be.

I did, and I got it.

I may have had a 1-3 percent negotiation threshold but if I gave an offer and someone came back, I went to the next swinging Dick. I don’t have time for games or bitter team members. So as an employee I tell them what I make or want and wait for their offer, take it or leave it. No negotiations

That's a great way to miss fantastic opportunities in life. 👌

POWER Engineers NtTy44 Sep 6, 2018

Not really. It’s a way to cut the bullshit. Employers don’t want to get into negotiations with people. I may say I need an extra week of PTO or something but it’s either near or on point or it’s not.

ALWAYS negotiate, even if they paid you top of the market. They are willing to give you that much because they like you. You should do at least one round of back and forth.
