I see all these companies try to cut down on the plastic drinks at work, encourage you to recycle, etc, give out paper straws instead of plastic. etc. do you personally care about the environment?
For the people that care a lot, care to explain why?
Even ignoring climate change (which I don't think we should) -- I think it is part of a natural respect for the environment and each other. We all benefit and survive, ultimately, because we have a planet and an environment to live on and draw resources from. Also, the natural beauty of the earth is something that most people if not everyone appreciate. Not just natural beauty but also clean roads, sidewalks, and alleyways all contribute to a feeling of order and serenity. It's just so important psychologically as well as on a more macro- level, and it sucks that some people have given up on it because their team disagrees politically or they just are nihilistic or uneducated.
Nailed it. There’s not a single day goes by without feeling terrible about how we collectively are destroying our planet. There are clear signs and warnings all over the place and still there are people around us who just can’t comprehend this simple fact / truth. I feel responsible and hence, I make it a point to plant 10 saplings/seeds in my garden and also volunteer at the local community to help with the green drive initiatives. That’s the only way I think we can survive. “Oxygen and water”, we need these two things, simple as that.
Google's datacenters have been using 100% renewable energy for the last 2 years. These datacenters account for about 1/2200 of global electricity use. That's not nothing. Source: https://sustainability.google/reports/environmental-report-2019/
I do. I don't use paper cups at work, Carry a water bottle and don't buy plastic water bottles/cans. I am also a minimalist so in many ways since I avoid purchasing a lot, thus reducing carbon footprint. I try to be consciously aware and pick sustainable options. I also support local produce and do my share of supporting National parks. IMHO we all should be environmental conscious; don't be a SJW, but small things to begin with like avoid taking many napkins during lunch.
I care about waste. I won’t grab a million napkins at lunch. But I enjoy my convenience and I think we all deserve to enjoy convenience. Bottled water is very convenient sometimes, and I should not feel bad about taking it.
Is this comment a direct reply to mine (above yours)?
I care deeply. I avoid excess energy use, ride a bike to work most of the time, and have never owned or driven a car. City dwellers use a lot less energy than suburbanites because they usually don't have cars. People think big cities are bad for the environment but it's the opposite. And with today's internet shopping putting many more delivery trucks in the roads, it's the city dwellers who are more energy efficient as a single delivery can serve hundreds of recipients. I highly recommend the book "Green Metropolis" for a great look at how cities are greener than people think.
Imagine if everyone in your house was just pooping and throwing garbage everywhere. On the floors, in the sink, in your bed. Imagine if you parked your car inside your house and left the engine running. That’s basically a microcosm of the earth. This is the ONLY HOME WE HAVE!! Forget global warming for a minute. Why is it so hard for people to respect and care for our collective home?? We trash it like we have somewhere else to go. Nah bruh, we’re stuck here! Friggin start taking care of it!
Yes but I still prefer using plastic forks and paper plates because I'm lazy
Meh...the planet has gone through numerous climate changes through its life. One day there will be a climate that is inhospitable for human life and we will all die. This change will have nothing to do with the impact from humans. If you think we can change these natural occurring forces, then I have a bridge to sell you.
this is lazy thinking. people like you think you can appropriate george carlin's jokes to reinforce your own bad behavior. i can guarantee you if carlin were alive today he would not be in favor of mindless destruction of the planet. please rethink this.
So, my opinion is that although I don't think the plastic straws being replaced is hugely impactful (I could be wrong), I think the symbolic value of being a society that cares about the environment is important through such actions. However, I also think that it is important to institute "bigger" more abstract policies such as carbon taxes. So yes, I do, and I find it sad that some people don't or have convinced themselves to be nihilistic about the subject.
