Do you have to tip extra if our delivery order is late?

Had a weird experience with DoorDash recently. My wife and I had to both work late, so we ordered delivery through DD. The order was supposed to arrive by 7:10, but the store didn’t have it ready till almost 7:35. Kids were super hungry and was also getting late for their bedtime. I was very angry with the restaurant for making the delivery person wait almost 25 minutes for the order. When the order finally arrived, I took the order at the door and (for no reason) apologized to the driver. Next thing I know, he sounds really angry and says I need to tip him more. I’d tipped him 20% on a $70 order, which was $15. Anything more and I could invite him to eat the food himself. I refused and he started arguing that my restaurant and I were terrible and had ruined his evening business. I called DD and they said they’ll take “action” on him. I told them that they should in fact take action on the store. Further, the delivery person knows where I live and it would be super scary if they penalized him or, worst case, fired him. I didn’t really want any of that. I don’t order delivery too often, so I’m not sure how j shouldn’t handled that. Shouldn’t DD penalize the store and pay the delivery guy extra for their trouble? Why should I suffer both with a late order and pay extra tips? TLDR: order arrived late and delivery guy asked me to pay him extra for the wait time.

I just place the order by calling the restaurant on phone and go pick the food up myself. Always cheaper, even the price listed is less, no tip, never had to deal with any delay, no anxiety. It’s good for the restaurant as well since they don’t have to pay any cut to DD. I fail to understand why people use delivery service unless they are sick or some unavoidable situation. I only use delivery service when I receive a huge coupon or I am terribly sick(I am single and live alone so can’t ask anybody else to cook for me). Recently DD charged my account for dashpass when I never signed up for it. It’s so shady. I disputed the charge and deleted my account.

Because parking is terrible in SF and sometimes you are not in the mood to go out n pick it up.

I did. I used the 20% option on the app. Not sure if he can see that at delivery or post delivery.

This is why I ask them to drop off (no contact delivery). I don’t like to deal with people in general. You’ve tipped more than 20% (that’s already plenty) and the restaurant’s delay is not your fault. The dasher had no business demanding you for more tip. That was way out of line. If they had a problem, they should have brought it up to DoorDash. Having said that, when something similar happened to me once, the delivery guy apologized for the delay and told me that the restaurant made him wait for almost 30+ minutes. I knew that as well coz the map showed him waiting next to the restaurant. I gave him $20 and thanked him for waiting patiently and bringing me the food. I was truly thankful and He was surprised but happy. TLDR: you can be extra generous and tip them more for their time (and hence the lost wage) but they can’t demand you to tip more.

Thank you and that’s what I felt. I’ll switch to no contact pick up. I thought it was rude to do that, but looks like that’s a better option. And I agree. I saw the delivery guy waiting for 30 mins at the restaurant. I didn’t pay extra because I’d paid $86, including $15 as tips for food which would’ve cost me 35-$40 in store. Maybe I should quit and deliver for DoorDash!
