I've seen a huge amount of H1B layoff posts. Perhaps it's the urgency of the situation but do you think FAANG targeted H1B employees?
Quite the opposite. CEOs know immigrants have substantially less freedom to switch jobs so they milk them.
I suspect it also hurts company's ability to negotiate with government if they layoff too many of those they fought to get visa for.
H1bs are likelier to post because they're on a strict timeline. I think that sort of post with a hard timing requirement weakens their bargaining position quite a bit. I'm pretty sure folks in that situation will take massive TC hits. If I'm not on a hard timeline and not as desperate, I'd prefer searching more "stealth" while my severance lasts.
The reason so many H1Bs have been impacted is because immigrant techies are extremely crowded in that space. So, if there's a mass layoff, the share of H1Bs will be high accordingly. I don't understand why this fella has to whine about it. Private organizations strictly take decisions on business survival. They're not racist. The beauty of America is that both immigrants and natives both are treated equally atleast opportunity wise. So be grateful for that.
They should be targeted. The whole point of H1B is that those spots can’t be filled domestically. If they aren’t getting rid of H1Bs then how are they going to justify continuing to employ H1B while laying off people who already have right to work?
I think they don't need to as long as 50% of total employees are non h1b. I heard about a law on similar lines
Google, misko, point valid and taken. But you have a bias in your statement. You already assumed that there are locals with the same skill level who were denied their place. I do think these days, due to heavy scrutiny, the companies interview too many candidates for few positions (even if they do not have to) so that they can avoid undue bias, by providing a fair chance to all candidates, locals and non locals alike. They do not favor H1bs, it's just that the ones with the visas come out on top (whatever reason that could be , network effects, too many numbers...). The question should be for companies to then compromise and only allow locals for certain positions. But that will damage the reputation of the companies unless forced by the government.
