A startup calling themselves as netflix with 500M reviews in a country where 50M populations live, entered Japanese market. As the expert, do you think that the model will work? https://pickool.net/watcha-yokoso-japan/
Interesting
Very fascinating. APJ is a gigantic market that seems pretty separated from others. I don't know enough about the market to comment, but I'm wondering the same question.
It's going to be hard for any new players to survive. It's not just a challenge on tech. It's also very capital intensive.
A threat 100% percent. They are operating in a part of the world where nationalism is strong. There is a preference for domestic entertainment and domestic publishers. That is why after all these years Japanese anime and kpop is still so strong around the world and very hard for westerners to replicate.
That doesn’t make sense. If nationalism is high wouldn’t each country want a domestic solution?
Anime and other Japanese media (like games) is strong around the world because it's not filled with degenerate homoglobo garbage Western "entertainment" is.
Even when Netflix takes over publishing of a piece Japanese content made by a Japanese creator, the second you put that giant red N on it, the local perception of the piece of content will be instantaneously altered.
Dumb question, but why not just selectively leave off the red N then? Or is that considered too “deceptive”
We are transitioning from a streaming service to studio. The N is our brand to indicate a piece of content was brought to market by us. Leaving it off will not grow our reputation as a studio. We just need to overcome the stigma that Netflix is a 2nd rated studio and make better shows in each of our regional operations.
Yes
Then there are other FAST services like crackle, tubi, Pluto and vudu. Are they threat to neflix.. not today
Companies like the US market because we actually pay for things. No use business-wise having a superior service that is free. But if they can get the cash flow going, could be a competitor.
