I just googled "Amazon VP of Diversity" and yes, some lady pops up for Amazon Studios but it appears that Amazon doesn't have a corporate level VP of Diversity. There is no Danielle Brown type (ex-Intel now at Google) who is responsible for diversity efforts throughout company. Am I wrong about this ? One of my friends who went to Amazon AWS a few years ago as an Engineering Manager had to fire -- in his first two months -- a young mother software engineer who had recently returned from maternity leave ! I remember his feeling very shitty about it but this was a task his Amazon director wanted "DONE" almost as soon as my friend started the job ! I can tell you that this sort of thing would NEVER happen at Intel. Pregnant women and working mothers are treated like royalty at Intel.
We had a month of daily D&I activities we had to do. It was mostly watching videos about celebrating differences. Sometimes it was things like "get coffee with someone of a different race." Our SDM followed up with the white people on the team during our 1-1s (we all asked each other). I was praised for having lunch with a black woman. I pointed out that we had been friends for a good 2 years and she comes to our monthly game nights. I was then told to have lunch with a different person so I could fulfill my duties.

Holy shit. Mandating token black friends now. WTF. I claim Oprah. You get a black friend, you get a black friend!!! Next thing you tell me is that my Nigerian friend doesn't count because he's not African-American and hasn't had the shared the collective burden and psychological trauma that 200 years of slavery has wrought upon those who ancestors were forcefully brought over here by the white man.
