I am in a group chat with my brother and sister. My brother recently got some new pots/pans and was telling us how great they are to cook with. He had sent some links to the pots and pans in our chat group. I did not click or search for these pots and pans at anytime. 2 days later I am getting retargeted on IG and FB with ads on these pans. I am in marketing and have a good sense of how retargeting works. But damn how the fuck did they retarget me?
Was the chat app Whatsapp or fb messenger?
It was iMessage. If it was WhatsApp or fb I would be a little less dumbfounded. But since it was iMessage I just have no idea.
This is nothing new
For sure nothing new. But I am just baffled on how quickly and how good they were able to retarget me without visiting or searching for these pans.
It could be Apple or any apps that you have on your phone that has permissions to read your message
Oh shit you’re right. I should definitely check my permissions.
In most cases your IP address alone is sufficient for the trackers to know who you are. iMessages integrates with WebKit, so the relevant page is pulled silently from your device even if you did NOT click on that link. From your screenshot it clearly looks like the media has been fetched from that website.
Hexclad ads are everywhere anyway. ...And they are pretty good pans. I got em at Costco.
Lmao that’s exactly what they were talking about. The Costco deal. Shit you work for fb?
He/she might have sent links. You’ve clicked. Cookies at play. Shows you ads. 🤷♂️ No rocket science here. It’s FB doing it’s thing. Disable app tracking from your settings. Apple here is actually protecting you
Yes, that would be the case if I clicked on the link or searched their products. But I literally ignored their conversation because i had no interest in them talking about pots and pans.
You are a look-a-like audience of your brother. He visited those sites and since you are connected on FB (I assume) you are being targeted.
That is definitely one possible explanation. And if that’s the case. Bravo to fbs algorithm. It just amazes me some times how good these targets ads work. Like some times I’m just talking out load to people about something and then all of a sudden boom ads.
yep and in all of these cases it’s based on look-a-like. For your example FB knows that you are in close proximity to someone else you are connected with (assuming both of you have a FB installed and allow to track location), that allows them to target your connections to see if they have the same interest. Best advice, delete FB.
