Was in the market for a new home WiFi system and almost picked up the Google WiFi product, it has some cool features Then I realized it probably calls home and shares all my traffic data with Google to profile me and sell me ads. So I bought a different product. I don't KNOW whether it does that, and I don't really have time to go and find out. I made my buying decision based on my impression of Google and its brand image, just assuming their goal is to profile me. If that's true, for shame! If it's not true then the bad practices elsewhere are hurting an otherwise good product by association, at least for some segment of people who are like me.
If it does, you would hope for an opt-out option. Like in chrome, using incognito mode, or like pausing your search history tracking. This should be clearly communicated up front, even if the answer is no, because it has become the norm to collect the information.
Googled it 😁 "the Google Wifi app and your Wifi points do not track the websites you visit or collect the content of any traffic on your network." https://support.google.com/wifi/answer/6246642?hl=en
That actually CONFIRMS they profile: "We do not share your personal information from your Wifi point or the Google Wifi app for the purposes of advertising without your consent." Note the last three words there. They are constantly getting you to consent in various ways and if they weren't planning on using your data they would leave those three words off. It says that they collect data on the types of devices connected to their WiFi and other related information. So they are likely using that to profile you, eg, to decide which types of smart home devices to sell you, when you are home, guesses at your income based on the cost of those devices, number of people in your home, who lives with you based on seeing their phone connect. Who knows what.
OP could have googled the answer in 5m instead makes bonehead post in error. I switched from the original eero to Google wifi last year and couldn't be happier. Great product, easy to use. Costco sells a 4 pack for a great price
Can't be bothered to spend 5min, that's way too much time to spend when I can just buy a different product and not need to worry. You think Google doesn't want the data? It is so much information: how much time you spend streaming, what times of day you're home, whether you use smart home products, whether you play online games. It's a ton of useful data to them. If they aren't mining it today they will soon.
Oh God. How paranoid are you?
Op, you use Alexa or Google Assistant? They profile you as well. I assume you buy on Amazon? They profile you too.
I'm ok with a website profiling my use in that site itself. I'm less ok with that website tracking my activity everywhere else, including if Amazon does it. So I don't mind Amazon using my Amazon shopping history to improve my Amazon shopping, or Netflix using my viewing history to pick movies for me. I don't want either of them making recommendations based on what I did on the other, or some third site. In other words. "remember how I interacted with you, but don't spy on me".
When I browse for a particular item on Amazon, I notice the same type of item following me around while surfing. This is Amazon recommending the item to me on a third party site. Google shopping does the same thing.
Good to hear about the answer. In a year and a half of owning this router, I haven’t had to reset it once. It’s a great product.
The privacy policy says they can use the data they collect with your permission. It says that they won't collect your browsing data but they DO collect the number and types of devices that connect, including number and type of mobile phones which tells them who lives with you (by their phone), how many in your family, how many TV's in your house, how many computers, what smart home products you use, and when are you around. Nothing in the policy says they can't profile you with that data provided you consent somewhere (unspecified where this consent is collected, potentially in your overall Google profile)
