How does Google decide on Amazon Principal Product Manager (Tech) placement? What factors are taken into consideration? I heard that they hire an Amazon L7 at L6 but do not see a Google L6 on levels.fyi? What is a realistic mapping?

L4 Google -> 45 interviews, 5 offers, AMA
Google L7 is Senior PM
They are known to downlevel 6 to 4 and 7 to 5 as well.
Why does this matter? On average, Google’s L6 makes more money than Amazon’s L7.
They downlevel out of principle. Literally had a recruiter tell me the interviewer said I cleared the l7 bar but they wanted to bring me in as a l6 since I was ‘only’ an Amazon l7 at the time. Fwiw the other companies I interviewed for were offering mostly director level roles that blew away Google L6 TC, which was about the same as my amazon L7 TC since I was top of band.
Thank you everyone.
I interviewed at Google and aws. The responsibilities and expectations don't match up. A level 5 at Google does what a level 6 at aws does (based on my discussions w the recruiter and seeing what my friends at aws do). So this has nothing to do with down leveling for the sake of down leveling. This has more to do with expectations and responsibility I get your point of view. Losing a title is a bad thing from a future comp perspective. But let's look consider this. At which company will you grow your skills the most and also which company will prepare you better for future higher career level work. If that is Google then go there and forget the level. If it's not then go somewhere else. Think long term and not title
That is a lie. In google it is hard to get prompted after 5 since you need people in level n+2 or above to endorse you if your level is n. In google level 7 is just one level below director and there are not too many of 7. Most engineer managers are either 5 or 6. That is, even your manager can’t help you much in promotion after 5.
Amazon L7 maps to Google L6
Thanks; do you know the factors taken into consideration or is it 1-size fits all?
