I am confused, whether to go for MBA or M.tech. I am an SDE2 (yoe 3) in Microsoft. Does it really matter in long run. I will expect answers from folks with 10 years of experience more or less.
US Masters may be useful from an H1B point of view and US PhD from an green card point of view. But for the large part it does not have much importance in your daily job.
Are you in India and want to continue living in India? If you can join one of IIM ABC or ISB, that will catapult you into a faster trajectory.
Yes.
Where's your undergrad from?
Master's can help in points towards PR for a number of countries, eg Canada and Japan. For the job itself, it doesn't matter
Thanks. This counts as a pro.
Degree only helps for jobs e.g research that require it. After 5-10y where you got your degree matters little as all that knowledge is stale. 30 yoe top-5 BS top-10 MS PhD CS.
Good point indeed
I agree. I did second PhD at work.
Of course
Depends on what you want to do with your career. If you want to be an IC role for a decade and try to go up the ladder in the same company , direct / relevant experience matters more. If you want flexibility in your career options, and try different things, then masters can make a big difference.
Yup. But staying in same company too long isn't a good idea.
Different opinion: if you wanted to do a specific area of tech such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, then you would at least need a master to do it. A Phd in that case is recommended. If you just wanted to earn more money, stay for experience in the industry.
No. Nobody cares about degrees. They care about experience and skill set which is worth 1000000x more than a degree that you can use as toilet paper.
Thanks. Do you mind sharing your yoe? I heard it matters 10 years down the line when you start looking for vp/cto/director roles
15 yoe and I’ve held cio/vp/director roles. As long as your in tech your def safe and nobody will care about degrees, some certs perhaps in some roles but that’s it. We also have a general culture shift in America to caring a lot less about useless degrees and acknowledging they are basically a debt ridden check the box item. Obv exclusions med/legal type fields of course.
