Should I get MS online in comp sci to break into SWE role? Previously, I thought this option was ridiculous and I only need to Leetcode since I have math PhD but with job market these days I'm not sure. I'm working in high performance computing with lots of lin alg experience but not sure NVDA, AMD, etc. would give me a shot. I do code but my role is not SWE. For what it's worth, I applied to tech and HFT in Aug 2022-Jan 2023 when I was still in academia but no interviews except two mid tech companies with no offers. I do have security clearance now so maybe that will help. TC: 185k (but my company has very limited TC growth potential if I stick around) YOE: less than 1 SWE-adjacent #tech #advice
If you have experience getting paid to code than an MS is pretty much a waste of time and money.
It's a waste of your time and money.
Nah, any 4 year degree will do as long as you have the necessary skills.
In demand for SWE roles? You may be surprised but most math phds say it was hard for them to find a job in industry. Same with me.
Depends what you want to do as a SWE. For web development, no. For more Generalist SWE roles or Specialist SWE roles, probably yes.. unless you obtain the necessary CS knowledge through other means, which is doable but very challenging
Send me a DM. I have a PhD at AMD in computational science. We don't care if you have a CS degree if you know HPC.

Nah I was math undergrad and I’m a swe lmao Also I worked at a shitty investment research startup for 1 year out of college doing data analysis, then got swe. So as a math PhD who codes, you are capable of swe.
SWE at google! Wow! I applied to Google but never got any interviews.
