Is it true that working at Netflix means high TC (almost all in cash), but also a constant risk of PIP and being fired? Asking because I am close to an offer, but recently read through the Blind company reviews. A consistent theme was that Netflix has a culture of firing people (see below). Some people consider the philosophy of no promised job security as toxic, some say it helps ensure that you are working with the best and you are not working with dead weight. It's in their philosophy and they are very upfront about it - so I doubt it's as toxic as other places with large scale PIP.
This ⬆️
there is no PIP but only fire at NFLX
They’re just a bit more “in your face” than other companies. If job security is a worrying factor don’t join Netflix, snap, FB (not sure about FB I know a lot of coasters there)
A colleague of mine came from Netflix and he said thats the best decision he ever made. Apparently the culture is so toxic and dog eat dog style. Engineers always try to protect themselves and dont hesitate to throw teammates under the bus.
my experience is the opposite, they live and let fellow engineers live. There are no performance reviews or promotions so no motive for colleagues to be cut throat
It's not toxic at all. If you have to carry dead weights you won't be happy. Also note we don't have quota unlike Amazon. A good team goes years without anybody fired. Above all, we are very upfront about how we handle this, and if you don't like it, don't join.
Not toxic at all.. but there’s definitely added pressure when you see folks getting fired around you as if it is nothing.. maybe after a while you get immune to it 🤷♂️
Good point. Love your username!
you should have asked your interview panel this. i did, and was reassured by their answers it’s not toxic. any firing should not come as a surprise. netflix just doesn’t bother with a pip to tell you that. your manager will give you that feedback and reasonable time to improve
It’s very political so if you join and can’t figure out what strings to pull you might get eaten alive
No wtf
Yes. Not as bad as Amazon but Meta like
