Snapchat and TikTok are popular among youth, we all know that. But do these people stay with the service when they get older? Does the feature set of Snapchat / TikTok grow with the age of their users? #snapchat #TikTok
I use less features in Snapchat now, just the barebones send/receive snaps, chat. Subscriptions/Stories I could care less. I’m happy that they keep it on the right side. Never used TikTok.
How old are you? How long have you used Snapchat?
Early 20s, used Snapchat since mid 2013. I survived the big UI shakeup, I also have the first edition Snap Spectacles.
We used Facebook a ton in middle school and early high school. Then everyone (like 90%) either deleted account or stopped posting. Tiktok huge now in college. Before COVID people were making videos non stop everywhere
But how do you do more serious stuff, like organize an event? Discuss homework etc?
Fb Messenger alone is still used a lot for collaborating/making events, just not the page/feed part. For like school work stuff Canvas/Google Classroom/blackboard collaberate. A lot of Discord rooms for tutoring. The school sets that up and it’s integrated. Otherwise it’s just a lot of group chats on iMessage or whatever
Yes. Snapchat has a very high retention rate
Snapchat has a very unique subtle user case. It has a very deep learning curve that you can only feel it when you have some real close friends using it as well. To me it offers a lightweight way to communicate and broadcast your status. That’s why stories feature are both successful in fb and snap. I still keep snapping with many of my friends who left snap, I’m pretty sure I will lose them if we worked on another company and all our interaction is likes on LinkedIn anniversaries.
Don't be fooled there's like 40 year olds on Tik Tok and Snap, they'll be fine

Do you think TikTok will leave the US or get sold
You work for Facebook. It’s not just college students anymore, so I suspect other platforms will also evolve and core users will age as the platform ages.
What features did they recently launch that appeals to an "older" audience?
None. They are getting a lot of older content creators on there and their algorithm is good at suggesting videos. So the older people are seeing more older content creators. They are getting celebrities on there too. Fb and ig feel too serious, versus TikTok you can be more authentic because the vibe of the platform is more about humor and authenticity than perfection / “it’s all about me” attitude.
