There's been widespread criticism of Spotify for negatively impacting artists' ability to make a living, and even for changing the way artists make music (to appeal to recommendations algorithms, etc). Obviously the company has claimed publicly that they want to create a platform through which artists can live off of their work, etc. I'm curious to hear from current and/or past employees whether they get the impression that the company *actually* cares about this issue, or whether this is just lip service. (Yes I know I'm at Amazon, which is obviously not changing the world for the better either. Still appreciate honest responses to my question :P ) #spotify #spotifycareers #media #entertainment
For all my life, I never spent a cent on albums, but I'm a Spotify Premium subscriber for at least 4 years. Please tell me how exactly Spotify negatively impacts the industry 😂 I remember long ago labels complaining about piracy like someone whould really buy all that "stolen" music if they could not download it for free. So naive and stupid If it's not clear - I believe Spotify saved the industry
yes
I don’t deal with Artists or anything related to that, but I have heard some projects from folks here where they tried different methods of calculating the fees that we pay to record labels which will increase the money artists will get, but all other compensation model failed to make any positive difference. So yes, people care here. The actual problem is not Spotify or their pay model, the problem is the record labels who owns the right to most of the music in the world and they get billions in revenue. Artists make shitty deal with the labels and blame on Spotify. Indie artists on the other hand have discovery issue where they don’t have enough listeners. They complain about pay per play rate, but forget to talk about the bigger picture. Spotify pay 70% of the revenue to the music right holders, do you think it matters financially to us who gets bigger pie of that or not. There’s a business logic to make more money for everyone, but it’s a really tough thing to come up with a model to give more money to the small artists and keeping everyone happy about it. And doing that while keeping the subscription fee the same. Of course we can always raise the monthly subscription fee and give more money to the artists, but would you really pay more for it when there’re cheaper alternatives? PS: I have very little clue on this entire thing, but it’s just what I know and my own personal thoughts and opinions.

Company only cares about sustaining growth and increasing profits by any means necessary. If caring about artists helps them do that then they care, otherwise they don't.
