Does Tableau Software pay better than Microsoft?

For engineers of levels SDE 1 and SDE 2.

Tableau Hanrahan Apr 20, 2018

Base pay is similar. Bonus is better at Microsoft. Annual stock refreshers and initial RSU grant are MUCH bigger at Tableau. 401k match is much better at Microsoft. ESPP is much better at Tableau. Overall, I'd say total compensation is 20% higher at Tableau due to the generous stock grants.

401k at Tableau is quite good

Tableau Hanrahan Apr 21, 2018

401k match at Tableau is capped at $2,500 per year. Microsoft's is more than $9,000.

Wlb sucks

Tableau SloppyJoe Apr 21, 2018

Not my experience at all at Tableau but of course, it can depend on which group you are in. Same with Microsoft.

Microsoft Kskdnn Apr 21, 2018

WLB at Azure is not that good in general. Core team suffers a lot from operational load and oncall stress.

I'll work for Bing and work life balance sucks here too.

quotes from different thread: "I'm a hiring manager at Tableau and currently have a few openings for web developers. I can tell you very closely what to expect. Assuming you get an offer in the lower band range of senior (4y experience is borderline for getting senior at Tableau) expect the following: - 145k base - 14.5k annual bonus - 5000 RSUs ~= 400k So a total comp of about 260k for year 1. Annual stock refreshers are also almost 3x of Microsoft's." that is for 4 years experience.

And $15-20k/year from each refresher so over $300k in years 3 and 4. Before the year 5 drop.

Your Tableau yearly so low?

Tableau Pete@Nerv May 3, 2018

I’d say comp at Tableau is way more dependent on stock than Microsoft. This is the second year of 4 years where my comp will probably beat my Microsoft comp strictly due to share price fluctuation. If you average it out over the four years I should be slightly ahead. Then there is the cliff but that’s another story.

Tableau SloppyJoe May 6, 2018

Yes, the infamous cliff. I sure hope management figures out a solution soon.
