About to give notice at Tesla, and I know they have to ask where you’re going and you have to answer or they’ll assume it’s a competitor and immediately let you go. I’m going to Google, nothing remotely related to cars, AI, driving sim, nothing like that. But I’m wondering if they’ll consider Google as a whole a competitor because of Waymo and stuff, and let me go immediately? I’d like to work my last two weeks :/
May be if you are going to Waymo!
That clown probably considers everyone as his competitors
If you have a vesting date coming up or are concerned with a gap in health insurance I’d delay.
Vesting won’t be for a while. I just want to finish a project. So I guess I’ll let them know when I’m happy with the project
Why? Just leave and let the project be. It's not like the company or overlord Musk gives a damn about you
What do you have to loose by telling ? Don't say--> walkout Say-->competitor->walkout Say--> no comp--> live happily ever(2weeks) after To me it sounds like telling them has better chance
First assumption may not be true
I’m definitely weighing the sweet sweet possibility of just having more time to chill against being responsible. It’d be such a relief to dip
Don’t mention don’t tell.
Don't do it. I know someone who went to a gaming company and when he put in his two weeks, they released him and called it a direct competitor because Tesla has games loaded into them. Btw.....he was in HR. Phucking joke!
Congrats OP, I'm targetting Google next too. Are you in a SWE or ME role? Care to share some details on how the switch is looking for you?
Thanks and good luck. I had a friend refer me and that made all the difference. I’m a tech writer with a compsci degree, so probably not too many similarities interview-wise. The switch is looking great though, L3, TC 189k (pretty dope for a tech writer), and I’ll actually be properly trained and onboarded for the first time in my life which is priceless
LOL a non chaotic onboarding, wonder what that's like haha
You don't need to answer the question regarding your next steps. Very likely they may consider Google as their competitor.
Oh ok, I thought not answering instantly ends your employment
Nope. If you don't want to answer simply say, taking a break...have couple of offers.
