It used to be Google would win every poll if you had competing offers, unless there was some crazy downlevel happening. Now that layoffs are common, hiring bar is much lower and Google no longer pays to dollar: what are the places blind thinks you should go work for? 12 YOE, TC 320
Blind is still heavily skewed towards Google but that’s likely because many of the Googlers here are from Google India where it is still one of the better places to work. This is evidenced from the sheer number of cringe comments and crass posts by those here with Google handles. In the US itself though, it does seem like Google is increasingly being viewed as just another workplace that pays for your bread and butter. I don’t think this changing perception has anything to do with Google’s compensation structure per se. It’s just that over hiring at all levels of the organizational hierarchy has made execution slower and more cumbersome for everyone. It sounds as if everyone there now needs to navigate a labyrinth of South Asian bureaucracy to accomplish even the most trivial objectives. Google’s brand of exceptionalism seems to have suffered a strong beating at least for the time being .
Soon not so. It is now impossible for Indian Googlers to work abroad!!
Blind loves/loved Google because majority of Blind users are Indians and apparently it’s a matter of prestige for them to join Google.
Google exceptionalism was always a mirage - it’s just that most naive junior staff got a reality check now. That’s all.
For a moment, I read “junior” incorrectly as “janitor”.
