Hello Canadian Blinders, My mom passed away recently due to a sudden cardiac arrest and it has affected me quite deeply. My dad left us 19 years ago, so I'm stunned to think that I have no parents. I am unable to concentrate on anything, including work and the psychologist I am seeing here (in India) thinks I'm going through depression and is asking me to take some time off work to be part of a recovery program (I told them I don't want medications). Is depression considered a cause for Short Term Disability in Canada that qualifies for employer benefits? I googled, but don't have the mental space to read through the nitty gritties and would appreciate help. I am also not sure how to bring it up with my employer, as I am relatively new to the company, and appreciate any tips on this front as well. TIA.
I'm sorry for your loss. I'm not sure about short term disability. Usually you can start with a short grieving leave, and if you need more than that, a mental health leave. Good luck OP.
I’m not Canadian but if you get evaluated by a licensed doctor it should. I would check with your doctor and HR team for more details
It’s a real thing, call your psychiatrist. Take some time off to heal. You will qualify for STD. I am not sure the about Canada but in the US. Depression does qualify for STD. Considering Canada is more human than the US, it should be considered. Let me know if you have any questions. I’m going through similar
You have to get a doctor to submit a medical certificate to qualify for EI. EI only pays very little and its only for a few weeks. You may have coverage through your employer for full pay, you need to look into the provider of the short term disability. Your doctor likely has to submit something like a medical certificate and periodic updates to the short term disability provider. You need to contact HR.
