It’s fine to lie on your resume if it’s something like inflating your job scope or fudging your start/end dates by a month or so. Lying about a degree you don’t have is too much💀

I got a copy of one of my background checks. They verified all of my education, and every employer I had listed. Every discrepancy was noted, even things from a long time ago like, “He said he left this job in July of 2008 but the company said it was June of 2008.” Not all discrepancies are meaningful, because memory can be unreliable. But recent ones, or ones involving degrees, are much more likely to be considered fraud.

Degree verification is such a scam. Most universities outsource verification requests to middlemen that charge a fee just to verify that someone has the degree they publicly claim to have. And you have to be the right type of party asking for verification, basically just prospective employers.
