My wife got a job with Shopify. She is supposed to start next Monday but her recruiter and manager got laid off and she hasn’t heard anything. She’s tried reaching out but the emails bounced. Did Shopify also layoff new/incoming hires? What’s the right thing to do here?
Get a lawyer and sue them when they eventually let her go. Reach out to managers colleagues. Find anyone on Linkedin for leads
I need to use bathroom, do I need to lawyer up? Apologies but suggesting to lawyer up for anything is just too old on blind. 🤣
Thank you yet another Genius o’ Blind Yes OP hire a lawyer if you wanna lose money. He’s gonna tell you the same thing that I will- there ain’t nothing you can do. I’ll send you my Venmo
DM if you need an internal email to get connected to HR. It’s a shit show rn, even laid off folks are having issues getting replies. Depending on her team she might be OK
Sorry for the situation, but high chances they will rescind. Keep fingers crossed and follow up. Also, getting a lawyer is a stupid suggestion, as Shopify is within rights to terminate or rescind employment.
What was her manager's name and what team was she going to join. Maybe we can connect you with someone higher up the chain?
Don't listen to this person. All they do is troll inside the private Shopify Blind.
If by trolling you mean notifying everyone of the layoff weeks in advance and helping them prepare then sure, I do a little trolling. 💚
Technically, they can rescind the offer. But not at zero cost to them. If they sent your wife a written offer with a start date that’s literally just in TWO BUSINESS DAYS, they owe her a separation package. If this was in California, probably about three months. The reason being is that as a result of the offer and set start date, she probably already gave two weeks notice to her previous employer (and likely already had her last day). You can’t just un-resign - especially in this market. I had a rescinded offer happen to me once. I got a lawyer to send a letter and they very quickly agreed to compensation. It didn’t cost me much in legal fees since I was only billed for a couple hours of legal fees (a few hundred bucks) - which the company agreed to reimburse me for. So definitely get an employment attorney (one that usually represents employees, not employers) and tell them that you basically need them to send a certified letter demanding that the company pay for damages. In this case, Shopify didn’t even have the decency to let your wife know what’s going on. She’s likely already entered in their HR system. So, if they didn’t tell her not to come, she should just show up on Monday for her first day and see what happens before taking legal action. She’s should tell reception that she’s there for her first day and have a printout of the offer letter and start date just in case. If they tell her she doesn’t have a job, she should ask to speak to someone in HR and make it known that she quit her previous job and canceled other interviews for them.
Possibly reducing expense. She has similar skills at a lower cost ? Happening all across now
Just because they got laid off doesn't mean your wife was cut also. I'd continue to follow the first day instructions and show up unless otherwise instructed.
Reach out to the manager on LinkedIn. Also don't quit the current job. Take few days off
