Hi guys, just want to know ... Can we list the bigger company instead of it's subsidiary, especially if the bigger company is more recognized? examples: Someone works for LinkedIn....could they list "Microsoft" as the company on their resume? Someone works for Oculus, could they list Facebook? Someone works for SAP concur, can they list "SAP"?
That would be degrading oneself
Degrading , upgrading , are we having superiority contest here ?
Pretty much, that’s the reason to put on the resume
Don’t do that, people will think you’re an idiot
So someone in the Oculus team, should not list Facebook as their employer on their resume? Or what about if you work for SAP concur, can you list SAP instead of saying "SAP concur"? Since concur is called 'SAP concur' since SAP acquired it. Seriously asking. Thanks.
It’s case by case but LinkedIn is different enough from Microsoft that it makes way more sense and will cause less confusion to say LinkedIn. If I worked for Instagram, I’d also probably say Instagram on my resume. But things like Oculus are woven into how Facebook functions so that’d be a second line team callout rather than a direct company name callout. If you lmk your situation here or in dms I can weigh in on how you should rep company name.
I wouldn’t. LinkedIn is more than a product from Microsoft. If you work on Office365, then Microsoft is fine. If you work on LinkedIn, then it kinda has to be LinkedIn... I personally don’t give a shit if you put Microsoft or LinkedIn. They’re both good and I’ll look at what you did as opposed to where you did it. Then once you got the phone screen, I couldn’t care less if you flipped burgers at McDonalds... solve the problems, get good ratings and get hired.
I think it really depends on how distinct the sub is. For Linkedin I would put Linkedin. For SAP i think either is fine, SAP or SAP Concur. I would just think about the most logical way people think about your group. For example Wells Fargo acquired this Real Estate investment broker called Eastdil Secured and rolled it up under Wells Fargo Securities. The firm was unique, elite and had its own brand and a very unique function and operating model. You could put Wells Fargo or Wells Fargo Securities, but that doesn’t tell anyone in real estate who is looking for Eastdil guys to hire who the fuck you are and what you do. So if you put either of these things the other Eastdil guys are going to look at you like you have two heads. If your company has no brand and just acts like a division part you should refer to the parent company. For example if you manufacture airplane bathroom door handles and your company is a sub of Honeywell. Probably makes sense to list Honeywell or Honeywell Aerospace on your resume not whatever random name your $10M revenue company was when it was acquired. Make sense? It’s a case by case basis.
i do whatever looks better
