I joined aws 1.5 years back. All the stories you hear are all true. I thought it would be different for me, no it isn’t. Very bad wlb, sickness, stress what not. Keep working at that small company, there are other companies with good wlb, don’t come here. Dont be the human who says we’ll see for ourselves. Don’t have to be the human who says we’re built different. Yes, you are and that’s why you chose to stay away. Edit: forgot to mention the big news for blind fam - accepted an offer outside, never been this happy lately. I’ll be out of this shit hole soon. Update: its impossible to hire engineers for companies like this so the load is not shared properly causing some engineers to work extra. Update: as others have mentioned, yes you may get a good team but thats on luck or from what I’ve personally heard or experienced. Also, this is my personal opinion. Everyone has their own threshold and experiences. I am just another unsatisfied aws engineer in line. Tc: 250k Yoe: 4 #tech #pip #stress #life

How do people think things work at ANY cloud services provider?
I joined out of college not knowing. Now that I know better I have already started to interview
Where? Seattle?
Dang but why’re there so many AWSers on blind saying it’s “team dependent”?
Because it really is, it's a huge organization. Some teams have a dumpster fire of a service to support, some don't. My experience has been great; but I work in ProServe so our WLB is generally pretty good since we're just consultants.
Because it is. My time there was fantastic. 2.5 years and had no issues at all.
Had a teammate leave for AWS. He returned to my team 6 weeks later lol
SDE?
BI
I heard it was very team dependant. Anyone from aws Seattle with good experienes. I’ve got a interview coming up and would love to hear from y’all
Im from Seattle and from a very impactful product. You need to learn more about the team before you can say anything. I said don’t be the human who says we’ll find out. Do you really wanna risk your peace just cause someone says it’s team dependent.
OP if it is team dependent then maybe yeah. I’m young and only making roughly 50k us. Trading my peace for a year might be worth it then switch to a better company. Best outcome if its team dependant is I make 3x my salary with a good team. Worst outcome I make 3x my salary and risk getting pipped in 6 months but have Amazon on my resume.
I like my team at AWS. I like my comp and my stocks. Work is work everywhere.
But do you agree to the fact that all I mentioned is true? I mean it is stressful, it’s a different thing for new grads who don’t have money but someone who is stable, trying to build a life, this is not good
@!retail org can you better define what constitutes your feelings? For instance, I did technical solutions Development in oil and gas where I would travel 9 months a year working 7 days a week 12 hours a day climbing towers installing equipment I had designed/built and trained others on. I made all my money on overtime. I decided I wanted a better work life balance but obviously my definition of “better” is different than others who think working 8 full hours a day is a travesty. I’m curious what makes you, in your role at Amazon, feel like the work load is unfair?
if i had a penny for everyone someone told me .....
This is gonna sound weird but my video game hobby has taught me to be suspicious of anyone who says things like "It works fine" while the other half of the crowd keeps warning me the game is in fact broken. The second half is always right ime, so I'm somewhat of a pessimist in these things.
You guys are lying! I debunked many of my friends who said the place is haunted or they seen ghost etc . I desperately want to join AWS to see it for myself and debunk ur theory !! But couldn't crack amazon interview 😩😩
Lol don’t simp for a company man
Not being able to crack the interview is a blessing in disguise. You don’t have to jump off the cliff to see if you’ll die. You just know. And by now, there have been 100’s like you, so take the example and move on.
Stay away from AWS (great work, but bad Ops) and Alexa (Non sense product driven by only executive promos and bad Ops as well). Retail is always the best option.
This. I totally agree, work is great on resume but bad bad ops. Not worth it. To achieve that great work, you have to work hard. Very hard.
is alexa reputed to be bad ?
Sounds like OP works for one of the core services? Of course those are fucking terrible to work for. Why would you ever think otherwise? The key to thriving at AWS is to find the green fields or recently launched services that don’t have the absolute chaotic environments of the bigger ones. You gotta learn to play the game properly!
Thanks for agreeing that aws sucks. True, You have to cunning and smart. But the key is everyone wants to be in one of those teams and coming as an external candidate is not easy.
I don’t agree that AWS sucks - just that the core service teams of it suck. I was there for years and really enjoyed it. I learned a lot, made a bunch of money, and didn’t have the bad experiences you did. Well, I had one bad experience when I was first hired, but a team change after 1 month took care of that. If you were in a bad situation, you should have changed teams. Plain and simple. It is so easy to do so at Amazon that I never had much sympathy for the people who just sat in their shitty situations and whined about it.
I agree with everything OP said
!retailing makes $250K. I think AWS has a right to take your soul at that point.
Didn’t realize AWS could function without workers
