While I find it concerning that there was no attempt to get his side and it seems, perhaps, heavy handed to lose your job on a first offense, he also should have known better. He's an adult and it's not like he made this joke to his chums in the bar but during a presentation where his behavior reflected on his academic institution. Is it so surprising said institution cut him free? Imagine the same comment made about people of color or people from a specific religion. While it is too bad he did this to himself, he did, in fact, do it to himself.
Not sure what Crockford did except saying that conference talks seemed stupider over the course of a day? Impolitic, sure, but ... Doesn't seem like threatening behavior. Did I miss something?
People get offended by smallest things. It's unbelievable. Btw. The comment he made about conference talks seemed stupider over he course of a day was due the fact they served alcohol during the day at the conference. Not sure how someone can get offended by that; he was just stating the obvious.
There's an old American saying, "don't throw the baby out with the bath water". It seems like people these days think that if someone isn't perfect, they have nothing to offer the rest of us. This is a perfect illustration of this massive breakdown.
