Dropbox stocks arent doing particularly great but from levels.fyi their comp is pretty great even now proobably only Fb/Snap in tech pay more than them. Guys whats your impression of Dropbox in terms of work and culture and talent and futue growh. A couple of years back I knew they were the top chocie and MIT grads left Jane Stret to join there
Snap pays more than fb but I also heard fb now tries to match snap if you have competing offer.
Facebook can't match Snap's equity package. They will tell you they can get "close" for new grads, but for E5 and E6 they can't. That is why I left FB to Snap.
But snap has hiring freeze now and the stock is more volatile
The product future seems uncertain. But as an engineer, I’m enjoying the culture and the pay. Love working here.
Why do you think so?
Could you shed some light on what product gives the biggest profit for Dropbox? I can't wrap my head around how they could have so much revenue by only having storage and paper?
work is extremely boring. the product scope is extremely limited, so what else do you expect. culture is mehh. it is not toxic like many other places, but the morale is low. most keep their mouth shut because it is their best option in terms of pay, but the company is pivoting into some bs product scope, that most know it will fail dismally. yet, the performance ratings metrics encourage people who "create excitement" about the products. talent are long gone! more often than not when i check who wrote a piece of code, the person has already left the company. and then there are "staff engineers" here who are a joke. i have seen much better work quality from college kids than these staff engineers. it is just ridicuouls how bad some of these guys are. the best case scenario is that it will not go bankrupt because of the competition. this company does not have a future. the best people wish for is salesforce buys dropbox.
” i have seen much better work quality from college kids than these staff engineers.” Lol. come on, please be reasonable
Better LC you mean?
Staff Engineers roles aren’t really to be code monkeys, which seems to be something you don’t understand. Staff Engineers and Principal Engineers are there to design and implement the complex systems and designs AND code when necessary. They are around to work cross functionally with teams and develop the code. I’m not sure why you’re so salty dropme but it seems like you’re burned out at Dropbox - Maybe it’s time for a change for you to go join Snap, Facebook or somewhere else you can be a code monkey.
Fb E6/staff don't code as much unless they are in specialized domains.
Where exactly did i say i expect a staff engineer to be a code monkey? A code monkey is exactly opposite of who I see a competent engineer is. In fact one of these staff engineers here which really disappointed me is literally a quintessential code monkey. The day he stops coding, I will celebrate. I have been working for years before joining dropbox at a few different companies, and I can easily distinguish between a competent engineer who understands what design and forethought is and the one who has gone up the ranks either through politics or just because of tenure. Sadly I have seen many more cases of the latter one at dropbox, persumambly because a lot of good engineers have already left dropbox.
Never thought about using Dropbox since I have so many other options that are seamless. What am I missing?
Ebay pays more than Dropbox
What level and TC?
I don’t understand how they’ve remained so competitive. Microsoft and Google are way up their butts with storage offerings. I interviewed there last year and was really impressed with the place. It was the most silicon valley interior place I’ve ever been in, almost felt like I was on another planet.
Yeah I still don’t understand why people would use them over Google Drive or Microsoft Live. Maybe all their consumers are in the US
Competitive pay and competitive products are not necessarily correlated. Plus Microsoft is funneling gains to shareholders where as Dropbox is funneling more to their staff.
