Hey Folks Any reason why there is no drug testing in many of the top Tech companies? But my wife is getting a part time job at Trader Joe’s, and they drug test there. Just curious as to why the disparity. Cheers
Because if they tested all the devs, they’d have to fire 1/2 the staff.
Managers will have to fire themselves first
Because for places like Amazon, you need the drugs to get through.
Unless you sort packages, where you have to get a drug test
Low class, low privelege. I don't mean it as an insult; my spouse is in a similar situation. It's just the f'ed truth of our culture
There are reputable, upper class jobs that drug test.
Are there?
Professionals / knowledge based workers vs laborers.
More accidents stocking shelves vs typing.
because it's already hard enough to find good people and what someone consumes in their off time doesn't actually matter unless you want to leverage it into a means of control, and that doesn't work when workers have the kind of mobility found in tech
Why would you do that?
Everyone would fail. Don’t ask, don’t tell.
They wouldn’t have employees if they did that...

Is meta really worth the wait?
Because developers are scarce enough and I suspect relatively higher levels of drug use vs. total population. I think it’s kind of demoralizing too. For what we earn, our employers expect us to perform. And to exercise good judgment. And trust us. We are knowledge workers, after all.
