Is Niantic a sinking ship?

I'm an SDE1 at amazon and I hate my life. I feel good about an interview at niantic (non-game team) and honestly feel like it would be nice to work there from speaking with the people. My only concern is that Niantic doesn't seem to have a product other than pokemon go, which is paying the bills at Niantic. If I joined, I'm afraid I'll only be there for a year until they let go of many people because of making no money off their non-existent product and pokemon go failing. They seem to have stock compensation but i'm seeing stuff online about a possible acquisition instead of ipo. How can I cash that out? Their $9B valuation seems to be coming from metaverse hype and a promised AR platform product, which I have yet to see proof of. I mean I'll definitely join because I think I'll sink faster at amazon than jumping on the niantic ship and then sinking later. I am hoping for niantic's fortune because the people here seems pretty happy and I'd like them to continue working at a place that makes them happy. TC: 160K #niantic

Are you working in an AR team?

The Climate Corporation TSTk67 Jan 22, 2022

Pokemon go has enough of a solid userbase that it's probably ok. Just not the crazy hype it once had

I play Pokémon go consistently so maybe not?

I hope so! I'm a user that stopped playing

As a frequent pokemon go battle league player, I’m very disappointed about their work. You can read more in multiple posts in Reddit. The game quality is too bad and getting worse. Looks like they can’t scale their service well

Lightship ARDK is public for developers to use. We are also a pretty “anti layoff” company. Haven’t had any historically.

I guess it doesn’t age well …

I don’t think you’ve looked into just how ridiculously much money Pokémon Go makes? User base is strong, and they’ve increased monetization over the last 3 years, and rallied in a few international markets. It’s just no longer trendy, and the game is kind of a POS compared to what it could be.

You don’t know Pokemon Go makes $1B+ per year do you?

Amazon mewtwo70 OP Jan 23, 2022

i dont. Thanks for letting me know. Glad to learn that

The company is financially stable for the foreseeable future. Plenty of investment and revenue. Had 0 layoffs during the pandemic. Even when other products are cancelled or sunset, the contributors will just get shuffled to new teams. I think the company has plenty of shortcomings, but job security is great here.

Awesome! From speaking with people at Niantic, I'm actually really hoping I get an offer.

Niantic rrHy53 Jan 28, 2022

AR still has a long way to go and the company is working hard on becoming a leader, lots of challenges and interesting tasks to do. Generally i like it ;)

Im about to receive an offer. May I DM you?

Pokemon Go is profitable, which gives the company a long runway to develop other products before it has this issue.
