I am interviewing for PM role and it's transition in role than my current role so I am not sure how much market rate for this role. Glassdoor numbers are messed up. New company is small so nothing on level.fyi or Glassdoor. I am wondering if I can just say I don't know the range for this position as I am new to it. I am guessing this may backfire me when they actually offer it the position. How do you guys tackle this scenario when you literally don't have idea about the range but you want to go for that role and don't want to miss it just for the compensation.#productmanager #product #negotiation
If it's in california, ask them the range They are required to tell you. It's still a good idea to ask regardless.
They are only required to tell you the base right, which is only around half of the total comp
Right, but it's somewhere to start if you're clueless. Plus, you'll be getting paper money at this company most likely, so it's even more important to get a good base imo.
Sometimes when you ask for the range, the recruiter says “it’s pretty much open, what are you looking for?” How does one answer this question?
It depends on what your goals are.
Why wouldn’t it be okay to say that?
How do you plan to be a PM if you can’t do a basic benchmarking / market sizing?

"I don't know" is far, far better than letting them make you give a number first.
