Discussing an E5 offer with Facebook, I have 7 years of engineering experience and 4 in management, I love coding, but mine is very rusty, how much coding vs system design / mgmt and supervision is involved? And how long is a typical promotion path to M1? I made it clear that I would accept an E5 offer if it is on the path to management. Also, would E5 considered as a "senior" engineer?
Lol
Nobody is going to guarantee you mgmt opportunity. A lot of people are eying for it internally. E5 is typically a coding heavy role(unless you join a product team which needs a tech lead). Try negotiating for M0 role(they usually don’t hire M0 from outside but I have seen exception made for G managers) yes E5 is senior engineer. Band is quite wide - 4 years of experience to 14.
It was clear that m0 (internal only) is out of question, will check again.
E5 is code heavy in most cases, even if you end up as TL. Transition to management is not going to be super fast, so you should be expecting to stay as E5 at least for one year
Appreciate the insight, I heard that E5/M0 to M1 typical is 6m.
Not really. Even E5 to E6 is normally at least one year. You wont get to M0 on your first 6 months. Maybe at some point in your second half, but really a lot of things would need to line up for it to happen
Don’t want to break your heart, but I want you to take informed decision. E5 to E6 in 1 years is very very hard. I would say realistically atleast 4-5 halves. E5-M0 could be done in ~1 year if you already have agreement with the manager that you would be made M. M0 to M1 could take another year.
Great, will negotiate an M0, I will reinforce my rusty coding, and my 4 years mgmt experience, it seems that there are exceptions to hire m0 externally.
How did you pass e5 interview? I think you r under imposter syndrome
Interview was for M1, coding part was trivial.
Op, then why are they asking you to be a e5 engineer if the loop was for M1?
e5 is considered senior engineer. You'll be writing a lot of code. you won't be managing.
I am op, ended up an ic5 offer, I was super clear that I need the time to ramp up, they were fine with that.. I am going ahead despite the warnings!
That's not how it works at Facebook
Op could you share your experience?
OP, how is it going after ~6 months in the E5 level ? Are you well on the path to M0/M1 ? Is the coding part getting messy ?
@OP any update on how it is going for you?
Prepare for the PIP
Thanks, very helpful 😢
It’s actually quite sound advice. If you aren’t on top of your game in coding ask them to down level. I’ve seen a few industry hires getting e5 offers and not being up to the e5 level after joining and getting pip’d
