Horrible Netflix ML interview experience
I interviewed with EPAM Zurich for lead frontend role. During initial recruiter call i was told there will be 2 rounds of interviews, one with EPAM, one with customer - one of big swiss banks. Boy, that plan expanded quickly 🤣. First interview went pretty much flawless (it was pretty easy TBH). I was expecting interview with customer next, but they decided they want another internal one. Ok, fair game, maybe it was not as flawless as i thought. Second interview turned out to be probing my ceiling and was apparently for higher level. It went also great, money in the bank 💲. Now it must be a time for me to convince customer. Third interview, still not customer, was with hiring manager and involved money talk. After nailing first interviews I had a leverage, as interviewers told me that they have this opening for a long time and "see you in the office". I was so wrong. I got a low-ball offer 130K TC, which I countered with 180K TC (should have gone higher TBH). I did finally interview with customer, which also went very well. After that I was prepared for negotiation. Wrong again. I was given take home assignment. Distributed system design. At this time I was not sure if I'm still interviewing for lead frontend or architect position. Only half of first interview was frontend, rest was pretty much architect scope. Since 4 weeks I get an weekly email that they "constantly" discuss package and roles. Don't really get it, either you want to hire and can match expectations or not. Don't need 4 weeks of discussing, especially that until before that they were deciding in 1 day. I'm pretty sure they are not willing to go beyond the offer, so why not just reject 🤷♂️ YOE 10 TC 120K € (Berlin based)
IMHO it seems the like client company is not fully convinced yet even if you were the best candidate so far, so EPAM is trying to buy time with you to keep you around as potential hire for the role. Getting an offer somewhere else and then letting EPAM/client know by giving them a small window of time might pressure them into giving you a final answer and possibly the TC you want or at least close to that if you're the best candidate in the pipeline GL!
It happened with me also, after initial interview they kind of gosted me also even though interview performance was good, after initial rounds said something like position is on hold or something. And when I had another offer they expidited the process.
@op Just curious why Amazon to EPAM? EPAM being a service company
I want to go back to Switzerland and just exploring options. Amazon does not have engineering positions in CH.
One potential possibility is the ceiling on numbers. Being a services company, they may have established ratecard with client, if your ask is higher than billing rates, it can get into exploring other possibilities mode
I wonder what is the ceiling for lead roles. I saw a lead role recently on LinkedIn.. If it's 180k it doesn't make sense to interview with them.
It might not be the issue with EPAM, but rather the customer or project bein indecisive. Also visa issues due to corona and etc. I had also waited for quite some time back when I was joining EPAM. Are the numers you have mentioned in Euro or USD?
Yeah, i guess it might be on customer. Numbers are in swiss francs, it's position in Zurich.
I see, thanks! IMO The numbers are looking interesting, but I'm not fully aware of market salaries in those locations.
