Hi everyone, I am a EU citizen, currently living in EU. I recently accepted a US redmond msft offer (signed on their action center) It is supposed to start the pre onboarding / immigration process. (but it's taking its time, already more than 10 days since accepting and no news, will follow up again and again.. ) I was not aware at all about the immigration process before applying. I applied for a very specific team but after googling/blinding, it seems that the usual path is a h1b.. Meaning that they will sponsor for next lottery and at best I will start working for them in october 2023 ? (with a probability so low that I will probably never start ?) Is there something that I am not aware of or is it a bit ridiculous to make offers so far away in time for a specific project / team that may not exist anymore at the time where the job can really start ? Current eu tc: 75k€
Yes it's via H1B only and that happens every year in September so earliest you can start is October if successful
You can go with L1 too
They can ask you to join in Canada or eu for a yr and thn process l1
There are other paths they can take. O1 visa; keep you in Europe or Canada and try L1; H1B as you mentioned… If there is a will there is a way. Just sit tight and try not to stress about it. It will be a long ride
Yes. But I am thinking that the numbers that I accepted (that are good for me to be honest) may become not that good in 1 year or more because of inflation
Yeah, it sucks, but that is the game. The best you can do is to provide the docs the immigration attorney asks you as fast as possible. You can also discuss with the company about the path they will choose and that can reduce some of your anxiety. It was a bit naive from you to think that because you are an EU citizens you would have an easier path immigrating to US. So, if you are not willing to wait, you can always renege the offer and move on with your life in EU.
Most common path is that you will work from Europe for 1 year and then L1 in USA and then immediately green card process
Yes, it's ridiculous. No, people in US think this is normal, and even more so people that actually go through this ridiculous process.
You can join the H-1B lottery, and if you get selected, you can start in Oct 2023. A better way is to let them approve your working in an EU office, and if you still wanna come to the US, come in 1 year later or so using the L-1 visa. If you have a family, only L-1’s spouse can work, while H-1B’s spouse cannot until your I-140 gets approved, which could take another year or longer. You have been warned that the US has awesome medical advances but a very shitty insurance system … There’s no universal healthcare. You get surprise bills, high deductible so so much out of pocket, and you cannot cover your parents.
Still, in comparison, I will be left with a lot more dollars in my pocket with a 285k tc in redmond than a 75k here. Also I think that the microsoft health insurance is pretty good
No to spoil your parade, but with 10 YOE a) you can easily make 150k USD in EU, and 200k with some effort, b) you can easily make more than 285k USD in US. So unless you're counting your TC wrong, I suggest you reconsider your msft offer.

How did you get job directly in US from outside of USA, can you please share the details
I applied directly on their website for all the jobs that I was interested in, and a few teams reachd out to me, conducted all the rounds and that's it. I am a senior dev btw it may not be the same for less YoE ?
You just apply, I know multiple people that got jobs directly to USA from Europe. The most common path is they make you work 1 year from a European headquarter and then with L1 they transfer you at states after 1 year
