I am looking to move to EY in technology consulting practice as Senior Manager 2 or 3. Role hasn’t been finalized yet & total comp details aren’t available. What should be the base & bonus for this role? I heard the bonus payout is around 10%. Is it correct? Does Senior Manager get any sales commissions for the deals they close or for the new business they bring in? If yes, how much? How’s the work culture in tech practice overall? What are the benefits at EY? I don’t have the details from recruiter yet. Are there career and professional development opportunities available? Does EY let senior managers expense the business development trips or team building trips? Do Senior Managers get team building & any business related expenses funds? #ey #consulting
Why are the heck are you moving from Microsoft to ey, have you gone nuts
Exactly. This move doesn’t make sense at all.
Dude, I don’t know your situation at MSFT, but SM role at Big 4 tech consulting is doing at least 2 (or may be even more) jobs at 1 pay, almost no work life balance. No matter which client you work, the nature of external, Internal and BD work keeps you so occupied that you’ll most likely get burned out. You can’t take most of holidays EY offer on paper if your client doesn’t have off on those(and you are SM so you got to keep the show running and your team may take off at those times). And you end up working on client offs if EY isn’t off. You can’t invest in many good stocks so all you have is your salary and bonus. I would highly recommend revisiting your decision. What’s your motivation of leaving Microsoft or similar tech company and joining Big 4 consulting ? On the work side: you might end up being at very high level doing strategy , PMO work creating power points and documents as deliverables. Some groups within tech consulting do engineering work but the nature of work is extremely different than Microsoft or similar company. 80-90% of SMs are always stressed out with no time for family and other personal aspirations. I am SM 6 and I’m telling you from my experience.
Looks like you’re done already!
I am considering SM level opportunity with EY. This is one of the most useful posts I read so far. Can you please explain what is SM 6? Does it mean, is it a sub level 6 with SM levels? or, is it 6 years experience after SM level is reached? Thanks in advance.
No sales commission, no stocks, funds for anything needs Partner approvals, and the tech work in EY is pretty dated, you should not forget EY is not a tech company but they are trying to do tech work and I’ve often seen engineers and seniors getting frustrated with the nature of the work. If your talents are in creating slides, politics then you’ll fit right in.
Don't do it.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
You will not get any sales commissions in advisory. Just base + bonus. You’ll be somewhere between $200-$300k. All Business trips are fully expensed. Dinner limits have been raised recently You can get team building events get approved by Partner/Practice leadership Standard benefits- internet, telephone, and some $1.5k worth of fitness related reimbursements. I am in M&A so won’t be able to comment on work culture in tech consulting but overall you will have to work a lot if you need to get to Partner. I’ve seen a lot of people from EY to tech so please assess your career aspirations before joining. Good luck!
