Elon fired half of Twitter and broke nothing: Washington Post

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/02/19/elon-musk-twitter-layoffs-tech/ Maybe it only takes 5 people to run Google after all. 4 to update the server package managers, and 1 to sit next to the server racks and make sure they are all plugged in.

Google pizzapiece Feb 20, 2023

Tell me you don’t know about how big techs works without telling me …

Goldman Sachs solomondj OP Feb 20, 2023

How it works is everyone sit around in bullshit meetings and 90% of the company are scrum managers (agile experts)?

Google pizzapiece Feb 20, 2023

yeah, once again, you’re just saying you have never worked at a tech company.

Google prime13 Feb 20, 2023

Funny. You def haven’t even seen our “small” data centers…

Goldman Sachs solomondj OP Feb 20, 2023

Ok, so we should hire more people to sit next to the servers

Microsoft lbez12 Feb 20, 2023

Or a very fit person.

Rivian -0——0- Feb 20, 2023

Already forgetting all of the things that broke? Lol

Google kguia Feb 20, 2023

Bunch of small things broke and we're fixed, net result is virtually no impact. Few months of minor bugs but cut your costs in half? I'd make that trade.

Google GsvF84 Feb 20, 2023

How about advertising issues? He cut things advertisers wanted and so they left. Twitters revenue took a giant nose dive.

Google malamala Feb 20, 2023

Maintaining a system requires less people than developing it.

Apple applefan1 Feb 20, 2023

What about Meta, Google and other companies that fired their employees by their thousands. Do they get an article too or it’s just Musk simply because Musk says things that the Mainstream doesn’t agree. Even as someone who doesn’t always agree with Musk most of the times, such articles will just push people to support him.

Goldman Sachs solomondj OP Feb 20, 2023

Facebook fired 13%, Twitter fired 50%+

Apple applefan1 Feb 20, 2023

Does it matter when the number of employees fired are more than 1000? 1000 itself is a massive number of families affected.

Microsoft 📎🤖🌎🌌☠️ Feb 20, 2023

That feeling you’re having while reading this and then going on to uncritically read other news is called Gell-Mann Amnesia.

Google maktun Feb 20, 2023

Author of the article is an idiot. Why would you expect anything to break or servers come crashing if you fire half of the staff. Unless engineers at Twitter were horrible engineers and half of the staff was supposed to "hold pieces" together from crashing, constantly do manual load balancing and so on.

Google maktun Feb 20, 2023

If someone fired half of the team where I work nothing would break. Team members would have oncalls every 5 weeks instead of 10. 20% of our team will be oncall instead of 10%. People would have less time for features but nothing would break.

Goldman Sachs solomondj OP Feb 20, 2023

So you are saying we should fire half of Google as well

Google VIrf08 Feb 20, 2023

People who are feeling Twitter is working as normal are so wrong! Have you even recently logged into Twitter? What a mess that is? Bugs in notifications, delayed dms , and not to mention constant flooding if TL with white nationalist ( as recommended) posts. Twitter is a mess.

Google kguia Feb 20, 2023

Yeah I've been using twitter for years and I haven't noticed any meaningful negative except for a recent feature change that removed the ability to solely see a chronological timeline.

Google kguia Feb 20, 2023

If you're a normie who just lets an algorithm pollute your mind by showing you whatever it thinks you want and you're getting white nationalist recommendations, that's on you. Smart people have always disabled recommendations by switching to the chronological feed.

The problem is that couple of months of firing it’s engineers twitter doesn’t work. It’s almost always down when you need to use it.

Goldman Sachs solomondj OP Feb 20, 2023

But all I need is an oil change, why do I need 7500 mechanics?

Coursera GQvx72 Feb 20, 2023

OP works at Goldman Sachs and probably haven’t use twitter recently. It’s almost always down during peak usage.
