Real talk: in what way private schools are better than public in nyc?
Thinking of leaving my job and start preparing for UPSC CSE exam full time. My plan is to prepare for this exam atmost till 3 years from now. I am also thinking about backup plan if I don't make it. Will I be hireable in the tech industry given this long gap? If not, what are my other options? Currently, I am working in Uber as SDE with 2.5 years of experience.

Why UPSC? The pay is shit or do you think you can make a lot of money under the table? Either way the reward for the effort is not worth imho.
Personally, I think UPSC > Any tech job with less than 20 YOE. If I had to choose a TV of 1 Cr. a year in India or a civil service post, I would choose the latter. Power and status trumps money unless you are a famous entrepreneur/innovator. Just my opinion
Not true with respect to power and status anymore. Maybe 15-20 years ago this was true. All "babus" are at the beck and call of politicians. If you are after power/status, then pursuing politics trumps everything else in India. Telling you like it is as my grandad was in the Indian Forest Services.
If you are young, go for it. But also remember ultimately you may end up reporting to an uneducated dumbass snake of a politician in some remote district of India. If you think you have the mental attitude that it takes to work in such situations, go for it.
I mean apart from maybe helping the people in need, what is the motivation behind mugging up facts that doesn't bring any change? You must be technically sound, you can solve so many problems in India with the help of your tech expertise. Current government is anyways looking to pave way for lateral entry at Secretary levels to improve the way babus work. Unless you're looking to earn money under the table there's nothing attractive in that field imo
3 years is a big gap. Technologies might have changed by then and your resume will become outdated. You will have to start from scratch I feel.
what did you end up doing OP?
It's a high risk low reward situation. One of my buddies did this and is still trying to fill in that void. Got rejected for a few roles and also tried pursuing a Masters with no success so far. It's a different route with a lot of pressure(especially in India where one's relatives casually ask: " what's your son/daughter upto?") I wouldn't want to deter you from taking it up. It can get messy. All the best!
