Engineering Manager promotion at non-FAANG vs job change to ict4 at apple

Hello folks, Really would love to get other professionals opinion on my situation. (Not at byton anymore) I recently got an ICT4 offer at apple with TC of 300K and almost accepted the offer. However, I am now being promoted to an engineering Manager at my current company with seven direct reports and they are almost matching the offer. My current company is an automotive company. Would love to get opinions on which one to take.

Current company will match the current Apple TC. Will it keep up with Apple refreshers? What about stock performance? Was the new role offered when you told about leaving? Do you want to be a manager? If yes, staying as a manager for a year or two can open up manager roles if you want to switch. That may offer more TC than taking Apple offer right now but lot of unknowns with that.

Apple TC comes up to 300K on average including refreshers over next four years. Current company will give more base pay and annual bonus but less RSUs (traditional automotive company mindset) i definitely aspire to be a manager and get into technical leadership positions. But working at a Faang is something i have never experienced before and also if i become a manager at faang, compensation will be higher. Still those things are unknown and unpredictable. Would mostly take up the manager position and get some managerial experience on top of my tech skills! Thanks a lot for your response!

Depends who is the other company? Is it considered decent? If so, I would stay there for 2 years and then interview for manager at better companies

I work at a traditional auto oem with 100 years of history. But not on par with faang obviously

This completely depends on if you want to be a manager. If you do, take your opportunity - they’re hard to get sometimes. If you don’t, why are you asking this question?

BYTON escapebyte OP Oct 14, 2021

Yes. I think i would go for that definitely want to get into tech leadership positions. Thanks for your response!

Tech leadership != management

Current TC?

Currently im a senior engineer with 175k TC and no stocks. But with recent org changes, got to skip a level and become a manager directly.

same money and you don’t need to manage people’s fragile egos. also, it’s Apple instead of a random no-name, so you have future earning potential at any other place if you so choose. did i miss anything?

You might be right. But you missed the part that OP wants to move to leadership roles and it will be much harder to do ICT4->M1 at Apple compared to just becoming a manager at this “no-name” and gaining ton of managerial skills which could fast track him to Apple M1 in 2-3 years

Yes my thought exactly. I have got the tech skills to excel in the EV field. So my thought is Adding managerial skills will help me to move up the chain. Hope it works our in my favor.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Im not at a startup right now. Moved to a traditional automotive company entering EVs. Just not sharing it to make myself known. But definitely i will face similar issues im sure. Hoping to develop good temperament in those areas as well. If i feel shitty, i will probably move back to just tech roles.
