Has anyone looked into working abroad for a year? Any tips for keeping same TC (I’ve heard Europe has lower TC for engineers)? Any interesting start-ups or mid-sized companies that have international headquarters? Looking to explore Europe while young. YOE 1, TC 180
Don't mention TC in France. They don't get paid as much there, but they get a lot of "free" stuff from the government, and somebody has to pay for it. The work culture is strange, but sort of nice. They are way more into family and friends over there than I see here in the US. Money and status doesn't seem to be as important. They are way more racist than I thought they would be. They seem to not mind minorities as long as they know their place and stay there. They don't really see it as racism though, more like being noble for putting up with minorities.
Really ? That's a bit strange since lots of brown & black people from the Middle east, North & Central Africa have been living in France for decades. I would have expected France to be more accustomed to non white people.
The lack of jobs is a problem. Their racism is different than here, they aren't nearly as violent as the racists here that's for sure, so minority tourists shouldn't have to worry (especially American ones)for their safety, but it is there and very apparent.
Don't go to Paris unless you are white and know some french. Amsterdam, London and Berlin are your best bets, plenty of tech there.
You would be better off financially working in Bay Area for a couple years then just traveling around with no job for a few years.
Lol this. Why toil for years at $60k in Europe when you can do 2 years at $400k in the US
Google has a small office there.
Don't ever expect nowhere near your current TC unless you go to Switzerland. For example in Germany I would be surprised if you got an offer over 50k. I understand that you want to explore Europe whilst young but you should be fully aware of what you are signing in for. The lower TC is mostly offset by much better social benefits e.g. free healthcare, free education, huge safety net, job security, work life balance, etc. In my humble opinion as a young person you won't reap the benefits but you will still pay the steep price (that's why I left Germany). If I was you I would milk that high TC while it last. You can always relocate later in life when you are a senior and want to settle down.
Can you expect a more equivalent salary as a PM abroad? Or is it all roles that have lower pay?
Look at average and percentile salaries in the us Vs different European countries and you will get your answer. In a nutshell most European countries have a much smaller income inequality, and hence it is the top paying jobs who suffer the most.
Lmfao come on ms, if devs aren’t getting paid why would they pay a pm more
There’s London which isn’t bad. Or Dublin, with a nice vibe for young folks. You’ll find people to travel with and cheap flights will take you anywhere in Europe within 3h max Those two places are hubs so if you ever want to come back to the US it shouldn’t be too hard
