I was laid off recently and it will be a few weeks (if not months) before I find another job. Is it a good idea to form a LLC (in consulting or investments or personal projects) so that my resume wil not have any long gaps? I am in CA and will have to file the paperwork here. I am not sure of actually making money through a side gig while I look full time for a job. Appreciate input from anyone who has done this before. If you did it, what was the company about and do employers ask for references or check what you did as a founder/principal?
I’m not really sure that just some months is considered that long of a gap. You could potentially save yourself a lot of headache by just saying you had to take care of a sick family member, or something. I don’t think anyone would really bat an eye at a couple month gap.
Unless you run Payroll, not much use. Instead, you can use any small company name and give your friend's name for reference
Forming an LLC is extremely cheap and easy
Don’t really need to form an LLC. But yeah you can do that to make it look like you’ve been doing something. Honestly if you just make a bullshit website with intake form and phone number for contact you’ll be fine. Would route phone number to a google voice or something
Makes sense.

I’ve seen ppl do this after layoffs and honestly it makes sense and could pay off in the long-term for your own brand and potentially tax advantages.
I am curious on the tax advantage part. I know people take all sorts of deductions but what expenses are legal and will have more impact instead of saving nickel and diming?
