I moved from India to the US. Was previously working for a different company in India and my E*trade account contains stocks from that company and the newly allocated Salesforce stocks. However, I am unable to sell my Indian stocks and the value is also shown in rupees for those stocks. What do I do to be able to sell my Indian stocks? Please help the noob!
Call E*trade support to execute the sell.
Recently, I have been in a similar position. It's a shit show, especially since your tax jurisdiction has changed. Your Indian company stocks were probably rupee denominated. Also, ask them to update your tax status by either clarifying that you filed taxes in the US (if you did), or by submitting proof of your current visa status. My takeaway was that if you have different e-trade accounts in different tax jurisdictions, better never link them, otherwise you have to keep calling them each time to update the same. Btw, you are heading into the double taxation territory. Unless you want Indian IT department chasing you on potential tax evasion on your stock gains, dont sell them if you can avoid it, and if you do, you will have to show the same in US tax filing as other income (at the same time paying taxes for the same to Indian govt, for which you might have to file a return in India and submit form 6166 to Indian govt to claim tax relief under DTAA) Good luck!
