Etsy layoffs/pip factory?

How are things at Etsy right now? I’ve seen a few posts on here recently indicating it’s a pip factory all of a sudden, and they’re trying to pull the same shit Capital One is by disguising mass layoffs as “performance fires” so they don’t have to report it as such. That said, I’ve got two friends at the company who say they haven’t heard anything about that happening (they have no reason/advantage to lie to me about this). How are things looking?

How are things at capital one looking? Seems like there are some openings

Not good. Culture has changed completely after a bunch of ex-amazon execs were hired on. This company’s overall plan is to just be a cheap imitation of Amazon’s culture while paying less than half as much and being nowhere near as talented. Big time layoffs in Card last week that never were officially acknowledged by the company because they claimed them to be performance related (some are, but when you fire everyone on the same day, that doesn’t hold up as the real reason). Strong reason to believe they’re going to do that again in August in other organizations.

That’s true!! Things don’t look good right now..

I just interviewed there for a PM job and didn't get that signal from the HM. In fact, they are hiring across the board and the benefits seem pretty nice lol. The one thing I did pick up on was they preferred me to come in a few days a week instead of fully remote. Thats fine cause I live in NYC, but it was advertised as remote lol. I wouldn't be shocked if they are though, seems like alot of orgs are doing shadow PIPs/layoffs atm.

Instead of layoffs, Etsy fires people with PIP. It's very common these days. Why not be honest about the company's financial situation but resort to lying about engineers' performance?

No foreseeable layoffs. But we'll see after earnings.

Whether it’s Etsy or Capital One, seems like some of y’all may be looking for a new role. DM if TikTok / Bytedance is of interest. We pay well, have plenty of open roles.

How come suddenly so many engineers are underperforming? Etsy turned into a PIP Factory.

Etsy boba🪢time Sep 23, 2023

Spineless management.

Etsy nxxY34 Sep 2, 2023

Etsy has for a long time had a culture that severely discouraged PIPs and bad performance reviews unless really warranted. There's always exceptions but overall that was the culture. Shuffle people around if needed but keep them. That's changing since it's becoming clear that the company is not doing well financially and there's a lot of accumulated dead weight, over promoted people, etc. So compared to previously Etsy is a PIP factory but compared to every other tech company (even in 2019) it's not. It doesn't help that a lot of people stay at Etsy for a long time which make them lack awareness of how other tech companies operate (both in terms of expectations and PIP levels).

Directors and VPs are dead weight, not the hard-working engineers.

Etsy nxxY34 Sep 16, 2023

You mean the hard working engineers that kept asking to only work 30 hours a week at every company wide Q&A session last year? Not that I disagree that a lot of the management chain should also be PIPed.

Actually the problem is Silverman, daniel, Moskowitz. Blew $2B on bad m&a (extremely poor business judgment) and took on $2B of debt to finance something they absolutely didn’t need. Guess who unloaded $270M worth of stock and is screwing you all over
