Thermofisher doesn’t pay much IMO

Blind community might say very less. It is twice the postdoc salary and transition from academia to industry is not easy. Your friend should consider taking it if transitioning from academia and look for another after getting some industry experience.

If LA, they will increase if you ask. 5-10k. Say “this is not make or break, but I’d prefer to have raised the base”This is the time for it. Once u r in, it’s tough to get raise. There’s very decent WLB here and R&D has very good training infrastructure- you will learn a lot.

I’m a Staff Scientist in R&D but in the mid-west. With a PhD and 3+ years of post doc you should ask for 125K - 130K. Also, bonus for Band 7 is 12% and not 10%. Get a confirmation on that. In SF, my friend with PhD and 2 YOE was offered 125K at Band 6 two years back. They are now Band 7 and get 135K. Here is what I know... Band 7 (Staff): PhD - 8 YOE - Midwest - 121K PhD - 4 YOE - SF - 135K Masters - 10 YOE - Midwest - 121K Band 6 (Scientist III): PhD - 2 YOE - Midwest - 105K PhD - 5 YOE - Midwest - 95K Masters - 8 YOE - Midwest - 93K

That’s very low. I’d say 125-130k base plus 10% bonus is good. At staff level you should be at 150k but since you dont have much experience they won’t give you a lot. But 110k plus 10% bonus is too little. Taxes and 401k will eat you alive and Thermo will make you work non stop. Tell them that you did your market research and this is way below the market rate. You’re going in as a staff scientist. That’s an experienced position. On top of that you’re in CA which is an expensive state. For your own peace of mind and your financial health, I’d say try to push them!

The 7 band is 90-155 with 130 the median, bonus target of 12%. This includes 7s that are people managers that are on the higher end. A bit confused since 10% target suggests it's a band 6, which would put this at about the max.
