I got a job offer as head of data science at a series B startup to build out the DS org. I'd also be the first data scientist. Base salary of 200K, 0.06% equity. Title inflation aside, maybe data science manager or senior DS manager is a more apt description. The strike price on the stock options is 70K total though over the full four years, so the exercise cost and tax burden involved is substantial. How does this offer stack up, in your experience of Series B (or thereabouts) companies, and similar roles?
You can negotiate for more, esp on equity. DM if you have questions
Series B options are unlikely to be liquid anytime soon, and even if they are, very hard to say what they're worth. For decision making purposes I'd mark them to zero unless an IPO/acquisition is knocking their door down, and even then, current markets make that a far less lucrative prospect. That said, 0.06% seems pretty low. I'd either ask for more cash (225k?) or 0.1% equity. I have some relevant, recent experience here, feel free to dm. Fyi, it's quite easy to figure out an identity from the details you shared. I'd suggest removing them if that's a concern.
Thanks for the thoughts, as well as the suggestion. I removed several of the details.
So is this 250k per year? In hcol?
I would say medium cost of living. I won't disclose the city, but its comparable to austin in col.
