The hundreds of comments on the post are 99% indian. It's wild out there! We need a h1b pause as we clearly don't even have enough jobs for indians here in US anymore. Not factoring unemployed citizens and 1% of h1b holders that aren't Indian. Market is saturated
Your POV is flawed and biased. Here’s why - - more Indians in tech so you are likely to see them - more H1Bs from India so again you are likely going to see them - Jobless citizens/residents don’t have a clock running, have government benefits and can get unemployment paycheck. For the other group, it’s tough. What you are seeing is fight for survival, currently one group is more hungry than other
What are you on? Unemployment checks aren’t paying tech salaries. The job of the government is to protect its citizens not the hungriest people around the world. I’m fine with saying our government is incompetent and lets corporations dictate their policies, but don’t act like if westerners went anywhere outside of the west and they were “hungry” they’d be treated as well
Florida wanted me to show up in person every week to be able to collect the max unemployment which was $235/wk aka $12k/yr. Unemployment doesn’t even pay part time McDonald’s paychecks let alone enough to delay looking for a job. I told them I changed my mind and wasn’t interested.
Horses left that barn years ago. Most companies no longer expend much effort sponsoring H1Bs anymore, they just write job offers to Indians in India. Same result: fewer jobs for Americans.
Um, yes, I’ve worked with Indians in India for years. It’s all Salesforce does anymore. It’s a shit show, yes, but alas Wall Street is perfectly fine with those 6am and 10pm daily video meetings and everything else this implies. Expect more from all the big companies.
wow, offshoring to indians give lower quality products? nice generalization
A lot of companies don't even hire foreign nationals. People in linkedin are just doing spray and pray
Bait post. Don't waste your time.
If there are no jobs, Indians will relocate anyway. Why pause H1B? The thoughtfulness of Congress was to attach h1b to the job market and employability. If there is no job for foreigner, they don’t get H1B either anyway. There is no need to pause it.
What are you talking about. H1b holders are job seeking for less time than citizens are
Is there any research data released by Labor department?
If you’re only seeing these comments from H1B holders, doesn’t that mean that most citizens are employed? Unemployment rate of last month seems below 4%.
All those tech layoffs and everyone was rehired
Unemployment rate is a bad metric to use as a proxy for understanding big tech. 5.2 million workers work in this sector. A smaller percentage work for the companies that are considered big tech and pay well. So, if we assume say 3 million people work at these meaningfully well paying companies then that is approximately 1.5% of the total workforce. Now, accounting for the 200k or so layoffs you’ve lost what, 7% of the total big tech workforce. Unemployment for big tech is double the national average. If you have an influx of H1B vying for jobs at the same time big tech has colluded to reduce salaries, then you’re going to wreck the skilled labor market and continue to see unemployment rise in this sector. Businesses will recognize that they can get away with effectively outsourcing the work and reducing the compensation. It’s important to focus on relevant context.

Lol. The insecurity of unskilled people. 😂
Its about cheap labor. Not unskilled.
Lol, companies actually pay more to hire legal immigrants.
Govt won't do it. If they do it PPL don't come to US for masters. They lose money
Govt will never do it lol. Can't lose tax money
Which tax are they collecting from h1b holders that they can't collect from unemployed folks here if they get a job?
The 'if' is the actual problem. Let's assume you pause for 1 year, that is 85K visas. Do you think the 85K jobs will be filled by locals? Most immigration law firms will be against pause because they make ton of money
