Curious how we are perceived outside the company. Have no plans to leave anytime soon (been here 2.5 years and counting) but will probably leave one day.

Well… it depends, a lot. There is always the big question on if you were forced out (and therefore might suck) or if you left at top of your game. Mostly it won’t matter.
I guess they are considered very good
Depends where you go, title and tenure. If you were there 7 years and left like an L7+ in a high impact org people will assume you're strong AF. Below L6, most people who know, know it's a crapshoot, you could be great, could be trash - interview will tell.
In my experience they are average to low average, but think they are above average.
But you are from Microsoft
Many end up here.
My experience is Amazon engineers can endure hardships lol. Overworked and undervalued basically.
Had a L7 manager join as my manager at Microsoft. It was quite clear that he brought his toxic Amazonian culture with him. Everyone suffered. He was finally asked to leave after a year.
Amazon managers can be kind of abrasive, so they can be hit or miss. They learn to adapt to a more collaborative env or don’t last long. Amazon IC eng are hard workers / take a lot of abuse (not sure if that’s a good thing, since it’s more like stockholm syndrome). But qualitywise they aren’t bad.
Engineers… they have good cred. Managers, don’t touch them with a pole.
Interesting. My long term career plan is actually L5 SDE (current role) -> (currently working on promo) L6 SDE -> become an L6 SDM after 2 years. -> leave Amazon after 1-2 years as SDM I think management is my long term future and it’ll be easier to break into that inside Amazon than outside.
Good plan.
