I have seen two ex-amazonians who have joined my team in cloud in last 1 year. - During weekly standup, they never fail to mention that they worked over the weekend or working late last night (even when there is no urgency). - I have got pinged by them on late evening (after 7pm) and over the weekend. Initially I ignored the chat until business hours, but this is still distracting, and had to raise this in team meeting (without taking names). I got to show some leadership there, but it’s frustrating. - They seem to have to mentality to get things done quickly with hacks, without proper testing, without any thoughts about maintenance in future. This sometimes results in software that is hard to maintain/understand and adds manual steps for the team in debugging. - They are ready to snatch every piece of work in team meeting, even when they have enough projects on their plate. Is this a cultural thing from Amazon? Edit: These people are not asian. Edit2: In previous edit I clarified that they are not Asian because multiple people have asked this question below in comments. I don’t have any issues with Asians.
Ah shit. The virus is going to spread to other orgs now.
Hahaha - Loved your sense of humor
OP need to wear the mask 😷
PIP them
Carefully, you might comfort the new Amazon employees
Haha, if they survived Amazon PIP culture you guys have nothing on them
It's the same thing at FB when I used to work there, their shitty culture is ruining everywhere else.
+1
Its also bc of impact culture.
Yes, all these things happen on my team and it sucks :(
Yes i see this constanly in meetings metioninh how they stayed up over night.. Managers saying "i have been thinking about it it in the weekend".. Calling at nights for no real emergency. The culture is different. Leadership encourage it.. The reason being azon has the most popular consumer products. So customer first everything next.. Now if these people are trying to create this culture outside.. Then god save you. Take action before you get piped out
Take action before you get piped out is my favorite sentence on Blind today
Lol.. Amazon has trained them well🤣
You know what's ruining Google? Perf Especially Perf Driven Development. Amazon are bringing customer Obsession to the table which Google is lacking.
I am not aware of Google culture so don't really know what Perf driven development means. But I want to say that you can be customer obsessed without working weekends and nights. Doing a good job for your customer, and working extensive hours without having a life are two different things. I have no problem if someone wants to work 24 hours a day, but if that becomes then norm and if it is expected of me then I have a problem.
Google perf and promo has ruined more products that one can count. That being said, I have noticed that those coming from the retail side of Amazon seem to have more of this toxic weekends and afterhours working culture.
Tell them you appreciate their Bias for Action and Customer Obsession, but you have to Insist on the Highest Standards and ask them to show Ownership by spending more time on unit testing and Dive Deep in code reviews. Tell them this is how they Earn Trust in Google and suggest that they Learn and be Curious about Google culture. These folks need to know we're serious about Hire and Develop the Best, not like the lips service they're doing at Amazon, amd take that Invent and Simplify bs and shove it! Disagree? Fckin Commit!
Genius!
Take a bow.. Perfect
Don't hire amazonians please.
I'm pretty sure that's a bias
Not all biases are bad. I doubt you will be hiring senior executives from Enron anytime soon, unless you are into perpetuating fraud yourself.
It's dangerous to ignore messages in Google Chat They'll get deleted before you know it. Can't we have a proper chat tool? Like Slack? Or even MS Teams?
you can turn on history
Yeah... For each message channel individualy and if the other person turns it off? This is pretty crappy. Also, on slack you can ask to be reminded of messages in a later time for example. Google is for some reason a user@ culture and not @user culture
yes. Many managers here encourage/appreciate working overtime
I’m going to start appreciating my manager who constantly reminds everyone to take time-off and if he ever has to ping out of office hours, it’s with a disclaimer that he’s not expecting a response.
^ dude, you are in msft, it’s not your manager. Gotta work hard in FANG for refreshers
